The Boeing X-50A Dragonfly existed to demonstrate one manoeuvre. It flew at least nine times across two airframes and twenty-eight months, was destroyed twice, and never once performed that manoeuvre. Both losses happened in rotor-borne flight, the regime the aeroplane shared with every helicopter ever built, and neither had anything directly to do with the conversion the programme was funded to prove [Boeing X-50 Dragonfly] [DARPA pulls plug on X-50 stopped-rotor concept, FlightGlobal].

This is the fifty-first article in the X-Planes series, following the X-1, the X-2, the X-3, the X-4, the X-5, the X-6, the X-7, the X-8, the X-9, the X-10, the X-11, the X-12, the X-13, the X-14, the X-15, the X-16, the X-17, the X-18, the X-19, the X-20, the X-21, the X-22, the X-23, the X-24, the X-25, the X-26, the X-27, the X-28, the X-29, the X-30, the X-31, the X-32, the X-33, the X-34, the X-35, the X-36, the X-37, the X-38, the X-39, the X-40, the X-41, the X-42, the X-43, the X-44, the X-45, the X-46, the X-47, the X-48, and the X-49.

This article argues that the two are not independent. The design choices that make a rotor safe to stop in flight are the same choices that made this aeroplane difficult to hover, and the connection runs through the size of the surfaces that had to carry the weight while the rotor was unloaded.

The Research Question

Can a rotor be stopped in flight and used as a wing, and can it be started again.

That question is older than the aeroplane by at least forty years, and no flight test has answered it in full, the nearest being a small prototype that spun up a locked rotor from fixed-wing flight in 2013 [Hybrid RotorWing conducts in-flight fixed/rotary transition, Rotor & Wing]. The X-50A was the third serious attempt to obtain one, and the only one of the three to fly with its rotor turning [Sikorsky X-Wing, Igor I. Sikorsky Historical Archives] [The revolutionary Boeing Canard Rotor/Wing aircraft begins flight testing].

Programme Origin

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA [Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency], and Boeing signed a fifty-fifty cost-sharing agreement in June 1998 worth twenty-four million dollars over thirty-seven months, with a flight demonstration planned for early 2001 [Dragonfly canard rotor wing unmanned aerial vehicle, Federation of American Scientists]. The manufacturer dates the same cost-sharing agreement to May 1998 [The revolutionary Boeing Canard Rotor/Wing aircraft begins flight testing]. The work was carried out by Boeing Phantom Works [Phantom Works]. The concept came to Boeing through its acquisition of McDonnell Douglas, which had studied the canard rotor wing through the 1990s [Boeing X-50, Directory of U.S. Military Rockets and Missiles] and reported a low-speed wind tunnel test of it in 1993 [Bass et al 1993].

The first hover flight took place in December 2003 and the programme was terminated in September 2006 [The revolutionary Boeing Canard Rotor/Wing aircraft begins flight testing] [DARPA pulls plug on X-50 stopped-rotor concept, FlightGlobal]. Measured from June 1998 against a thirty-seven month plan, that is ninety-nine months, a factor of

\[\frac{99}{37} = 2.68\]

and the demonstration the money was for never happened. Two airframes were built and both were destroyed [Boeing X-50 Dragonfly]. A press report put the programme at fifty-two million dollars when it was cancelled [X-50A Dragonfly concept canned, New Atlas], against the agreement’s twenty-four million dollars, twelve million from each party [Dragonfly canard rotor wing unmanned aerial vehicle, Federation of American Scientists], and the sources consulted give no official final figure.

The predecessors matter and the article returns to them. There are two, and accounts usually name the younger.

Hughes studied the same principle in the 1960s, on a three-bladed delta rotor/wing, and called it the hot cycle rotor/wing. A tip-jet driven rotor that stops to become a wing was proposed for a high-speed vertical takeoff aircraft in 1965, developed as a composite research aircraft design through 1968, and offered as city-centre transport in 1967 [Harned and Head 1965] [Smith 1968] [Amer et al 1967]. No source consulted records that a rotor/wing aircraft was built.

The propulsion half of it did fly. The Hughes XV-9A, a research helicopter with a conventional rotor driven by exhaust ducted to nozzles at the blade tips, first flew in November 1964 and completed its programme in August 1965 [Cohan and Hirsh 1966] [Hirsh 1965] [Hughes XV-9]. It worked, and Hughes abandoned pressure-jet propulsion anyway. The section on reaction drive returns to the reason, since the article computes it there.

The second predecessor is the one usually named. The Sikorsky S-72 Rotor Systems Research Aircraft was modified to carry an X-wing circulation control rotor, was rolled out in 1986 and never flew with that rotor turning [Sikorsky S-72] [Sikorsky X-Wing, Igor I. Sikorsky Historical Archives] [Linden and Biggers 1987]. The encyclopaedia dates the modification contract to late 1983 and the cancellation to 1988, and the manufacturer’s archive dates the contract to 1982 and the termination to 1987 [Sikorsky S-72] [Sikorsky X-Wing, Igor I. Sikorsky Historical Archives]. The RSRA/X-Wing flight test programme made three flights before it was discontinued [Corliss et al 1989], and the archive records the aircraft flying as a fixed-wing aircraft without its X-wing blades installed [Sikorsky X-Wing, Igor I. Sikorsky Historical Archives]. Stopping and restarting a rotor had been demonstrated, but in a wind tunnel, where a 25-foot Lockheed X-wing rotor made more than thirty automatic stops and starts in 1979, most of them at 180 knots [Sikorsky X-Wing, Igor I. Sikorsky Historical Archives]. The X-50A was flying about eighteen years after that programme was abandoned and roughly forty after the first one, and it ended the same way, which is to say without a conversion.

The Designation Is a Claim About the Concept

The number was chosen rather than assigned in sequence. The specialist designation directory records that the X-50A received a round number deliberately, on the reasoning that a canard rotor wing is a fifty-fifty mixture of helicopter and aeroplane [Boeing X-50, Directory of U.S. Military Rockets and Missiles]. Boeing had named the vehicle Dragonfly in 1998 and the designation followed in 2002 [Boeing X-50, Directory of U.S. Military Rockets and Missiles].

This is the second consecutive article in which the numbering carries an argument. The X-49 was skipped when the X-50A was allocated in February 2002 and was itself allocated in May 2003, when the next X designator was requested. The X-50 took the round number because the agency asked for it, on the stated ground that the Dragonfly would be the first true fifty-fifty marriage of helicopter and high-speed fixed-wing aircraft [Parsch, DOD 4120.15-L Addendum, MDS Designators Allocated After 19 August 1998].

A designation is a claim made before the evidence arrives, and this one was falsified. A fifty-fifty mixture of two flight regimes is a description of an aspiration. The aeroplane demonstrated the helicopter half badly and the aeroplane half not at all.

Sizing From First Principles

This aeroplane is sized by the conversion rather than by any single flight condition. The argument starts from three published figures, being the gross weight of 1,460 pounds, the twelve foot rotor and the 130 knot conversion condition [The revolutionary Boeing Canard Rotor/Wing aircraft begins flight testing] [Pandya and Aftosmis 2001]. From them it derives the advance ratio a stopping rotor must pass through, the lift it loses on the way, and the lifting area that has to replace it. The rotor tip speed and the stations of the surfaces are not published, so every result that depends on them is given as a range.

What Happens to a Rotor That Stops

The Advance Ratio Has No Upper Bound

The advance ratio relates flight speed to rotor tip speed. It was the subject of the previous article in this series.

\[\mu = \frac{V}{\Omega R}\]

The rotorcraft literature treats advance ratios between hover and about $\mu = 0.40$ as the helicopter’s range [Harris 2008], and the X-49A reached 0.442 [X-49]. The X-49 existed to push that number up by a little.

The X-50 had to pass through all of it. As $\Omega \rightarrow 0$ at constant flight speed, the advance ratio grows without bound.

\[\lim_{\Omega \to 0} \frac{V}{\Omega R} = \infty\]

The X-50A’s rotor tip speed appears in none of the sources consulted, so the entry condition is computed across the range conventional practice would suggest. At the 130 knot conversion condition of the sole public computational study [Pandya and Aftosmis 2001], a tip speed of 500 feet per second gives $\mu = 0.439$ and a tip speed of 700 feet per second gives $\mu = 0.313$. The tip speed that would place the entry exactly at the conventional limit is

\[\Omega R = \frac{V}{0.40} = \frac{219.4}{0.40} = 548.5 \ \mathrm{ft/s}\]

which sits in the middle of that range. So the X-50A most likely began its conversion at about the advance ratio where the X-49A ran out of aeroplane, and then went further in a direction no conventional rotor can go.

What lies in that direction can be stated exactly. The region of the disc in which the blade meets the air backwards is a circle of diameter $\mu R$ lying on the retreating side, so its share of the disc area is

\[\frac{A_{\text{rev}}}{A} = \frac{\pi (\mu R / 2)^2}{\pi R^2} = \frac{\mu^2}{4}\]

At the conversion entry that is between 2.46 and 4.81 percent of the disc, which is unremarkable and is about what the X-49A carried at its maximum speed. The relation is quadratic, and it does not stop.

\[\mu = 1 \ \Rightarrow \ \frac{A_{\text{rev}}}{A} = 25\% \qquad \mu = 2 \ \Rightarrow \ \frac{A_{\text{rev}}}{A} = 100\%\]

At an advance ratio of two the reverse flow region covers the entire disc. Holding the conversion speed of 219.4 feet per second, that happens when the tip speed has fallen to

\[\Omega R = \frac{V}{2} = 109.7 \ \mathrm{ft/s}\]

which is 20 percent of the tip speed the aeroplane most likely entered conversion at, and the rotor still has all of that left to lose. The quadratic form is exact only up to that point, since beyond an advance ratio of two the circle it describes is larger than the disc and there is no more disc left to cover.

The retreating tip reaches zero airspeed earlier still. Its velocity is

\[V_{\text{ret}} = \Omega R - V = \Omega R \,(1 - \mu)\]

which vanishes at an advance ratio of one and is negative beyond it, so from that point the retreating blade travels backwards through the air along its entire length. The advancing blade has the opposite problem, a compressibility one,

\[M_{\text{adv}} = \frac{\Omega R + V}{a}\]

giving between 0.644 and 0.824 at conversion entry, falling as the rotor slows, so compressibility alone gets easier on the way down.

Lift Falls With the Square of Rotor Speed

Rotor thrust in hover follows from the thrust coefficient, in the standard form used throughout the rotorcraft literature [Leishman, Principles of helicopter aerodynamics] [Johnson, Helicopter theory] [Seddon, Basic helicopter aerodynamics].

\[T = C_T \rho A (\Omega R)^2\]

Halving the rotor speed quarters the available thrust at constant thrust coefficient.

\[\frac{L}{L_0} = \left( \frac{\Omega}{\Omega_0} \right)^{\!2}\]
Rotor speed remaining Lift remaining
75 percent 56.25 percent
50 percent 25 percent
25 percent 6.25 percent
10 percent 1 percent

The same law read blade by blade shows where the difficulty concentrates. The lift of an element of blade at radius $r$ and azimuth $\psi$ is

\[\mathrm{d}L = \tfrac{1}{2} \rho U^2 c \, C_l \, \mathrm{d}r\]

with the local velocity

\[U(r, \psi) = \Omega r + V \sin \psi\]

and the sine term survives when the first term goes to zero. A stopped rotor is not a rotor with no velocity over it. It is a wing with the flow arriving from one side.

A rotor that is slowing to a stop is therefore losing its lift on a square law, and it loses it fastest at the end. There is no rotor speed at which the surface stops being a rotor and starts being a wing. There is a continuous handover, and the handover has to be completed before the rotor speed reaches the value at which the rotor cannot carry the aircraft.

Unloading Is the Only Way Through

The X-wing programme established what happens if the handover is not completed. The 2001 computational study opens by recording that analysis and testing of the X-wing found high transient aerodynamic loads during conversion, and that the canard rotor wing design addresses this by generating positive lift on both the canard and the horizontal tail so that the main rotor can be completely unloaded throughout the conversion manoeuvre [Pandya and Aftosmis 2001].

An unloaded rotor does not stall, whatever its advance ratio. That is the trick, and a good one. Retreating blade stall is a consequence of demanding lift from a blade with insufficient dynamic pressure, and a blade asked for no lift cannot be asked for too much. The reverse flow region can cover the entire disc without consequence if the disc is carrying nothing.

The bookkeeping is a single equation, and the configuration follows from it.

\[L_{\text{rotor}} + L_{\text{canard}} + L_{\text{tail}} + L_{\text{fuselage}} = W\]

Driving the first term to zero forces the others to make up the difference, and they have to do it at whatever airspeed the conversion happens at.

The price is that the weight has to go somewhere, and it goes onto the canard and the horizontal tail. The rest of the argument is a consequence of that sentence.

The Surfaces That Carry the Weight Instead

How Large They Have to Be

At the conversion condition the canard and tail carry the entire aircraft. The dynamic pressure at 130 knots at sea level is

\[q = \tfrac{1}{2} \rho V^2 = \tfrac{1}{2} (0.0023769)(219.4)^2 = 57.2 \ \mathrm{lbf/ft^2}\]

and the area required to carry the gross weight follows.

\[S = \frac{W}{q \, C_L}\]

At a lift coefficient of 1.2, which a flapped canard and a full-flying tail can reach, the required area is 21.3 square feet. At 0.8 it is 31.9 square feet. The published gross weight of 1,460 pounds is Boeing’s figure at first flight [The revolutionary Boeing Canard Rotor/Wing aircraft begins flight testing].

Where They Have to Sit

The rotor is twelve feet in diameter and the disc area is 113.1 square feet. The required lifting area is therefore between 18.8 and 28.2 percent of the rotor disc, and those surfaces are mounted fore and aft on a fuselage 17.7 feet long, which is 1.475 times the rotor diameter [The revolutionary Boeing Canard Rotor/Wing aircraft begins flight testing].

The spans say it more directly. The canard spans 8.9 feet and the horizontal tail 8.1 feet, against a rotor diameter of twelve feet [The revolutionary Boeing Canard Rotor/Wing aircraft begins flight testing].

\[\frac{b_{\text{canard}}}{D} = 0.742 \qquad \frac{b_{\text{tail}}}{D} = 0.675\]

Two lifting surfaces, each spanning between two thirds and three quarters of the rotor diameter, sit directly underneath the rotor. Here both surfaces exist to carry the whole aircraft at conversion, which the manufacturer describes as the canard and tail picking up the aerodynamic load as forward speed increases [The revolutionary Boeing Canard Rotor/Wing aircraft begins flight testing], and that requirement sets their size.

The Result That Decides the Article

The rotor is small because it has to be a wing, and the wings are large because they have to be a rotor substitute. These two facts are the same design decision seen from opposite ends, and together they produce a disc loading no helicopter of this weight would otherwise have.

\[\frac{W}{A} = \frac{1460}{113.1} = 12.9 \ \mathrm{lbf/ft^2}\]

The figure is 1.33 times the disc loading computed for the X-49A in the previous article, on an aeroplane one fifteenth of its weight. The hover induced velocity follows from momentum theory [Gessow and Myers, Aerodynamics of the helicopter] [Bramwell, Bramwell’s helicopter dynamics].

\[v_i = \sqrt{\frac{W}{2 \rho A}} = \sqrt{\frac{12.9}{2(0.0023769)}} = 52.1 \ \mathrm{ft/s}\]

The fully developed slipstream moves at twice that, being 104.2 feet per second or 61.75 knots, and its dynamic pressure is equal to the disc loading exactly.

\[q_{\text{slip}} = \tfrac{1}{2} \rho (2 v_i)^2 = \frac{W}{A} = 12.9 \ \mathrm{lbf/ft^2}\]

Between 21 and 32 square feet of lifting surface thus sits in a 12.9 pound per square foot slipstream in hover. The download on that surface is

\[D = q_{\text{slip}} \, S \, C_D = \frac{W}{A} S \, C_D\]

and expressed as a fraction of the weight the disc area cancels out of the geometry entirely.

\[\frac{D}{W} = \frac{S \, C_D}{A}\]

Taking a drag coefficient of unity for surfaces with flaps deployed gives a download of 12.9 pounds per square foot, and against the mid-range area of 25.5 square feet, being the lift coefficient of unity case, that is 22.6 percent of the gross weight. At a drag coefficient of 0.6 it is 13.5 percent and at 1.2 it is 27.1 percent.

The momentum theory also gives the power that slipstream costs. The ideal induced power is

\[P_i = W v_i = (1460)(52.1) = 76{,}082 \ \mathrm{ft \, lbf/s} = 138.3 \ \mathrm{hp}\]

and the real figure follows from the figure of merit,

\[\mathrm{FM} = \frac{W v_i}{P_{\text{actual}}}\]

which at 0.6 to 0.7 puts the rotor power between 198 and 231 horsepower, before any of the reaction drive losses discussed below.

The download is not the point, though it is large. The point is what happens to that force as the aircraft begins to move forward.

The Wake Does Not Leave Both Surfaces at Once

In hover the wake goes straight down and both surfaces are in it. The canard is ahead of the centre of gravity and the tail behind it, so the two downloads produce opposing pitching moments that partly cancel.

As the aircraft accelerates the wake skews aft, through an angle from the vertical given by the ratio of flight speed to induced velocity.

\[\tan \chi = \frac{V}{v_i}\]
Airspeed Skew angle
10 knots 17.9 degrees
20 knots 32.9 degrees
30 knots 44.2 degrees
40 knots 52.3 degrees
60 knots 62.8 degrees

The wake sheet shed from the forward edge of the disc descends at $v_i$ and convects aft at $V$, so at a vertical drop $h$ below the rotor plane it has moved aft by $h V / v_i$ and its forward boundary stands at

\[x_w = R - h \, \frac{V}{v_i}\]

A surface at longitudinal station $x_s$ is therefore clear of the wake once $x_w < x_s$, which happens at

\[V_{\text{clear}} = v_i \, \frac{R - x_s}{h}\]

The longitudinal stations are estimated from the overall dimensions and are not published, so the result is a range. Taking the canard 4.0 to 5.0 feet ahead of the hub, the tail 4.0 to 5.0 feet behind it, and both 2.5 to 3.5 feet below the rotor plane gives

\[V_{\text{clear, canard}} \approx 9 \ \text{to} \ 25 \ \mathrm{kt} \qquad V_{\text{clear, tail}} \approx 88 \ \text{to} \ 136 \ \mathrm{kt}\]

with nominal values of 15 knots and 108 knots. Between those two speeds the canard is out of the wake and the tail is still in it.

The ratio between those two speeds is the robust part of this estimate, because the induced velocity and the vertical drop appear in both and cancel.

\[\frac{V_{\text{clear, tail}}}{V_{\text{clear, canard}}} = \frac{R - x_{\text{tail}}}{R - x_{\text{canard}}} = \frac{10.5}{1.5} = 7.0\]

So whatever the induced velocity really is, and however far below the rotor the surfaces sit, the tail stays in the wake to several times the airspeed at which the canard leaves it, roughly seven times at the estimated stations. The induced velocity and the vertical drop cancel from this ratio. The longitudinal stations do not, and they are estimated.

That completes the mechanism. The nose-down contribution from the forward surface disappears at walking pace and the nose-up contribution from the aft surface persists almost to conversion entry. The pitching moment is

\[M = D_{\text{tail}} \, l_{\text{tail}} - D_{\text{canard}} \, l_{\text{canard}}\]

and the swing as the canard clears is the loss of the second term. Expressed as the shift in centre of gravity it is equivalent to, a form that means something without a published control moment,

\[\Delta x_{cg} = \frac{q_{\text{slip}} \, S_c \, C_D \, l_c}{W}\]

that is 3.7 inches at a drag coefficient of 0.6, 6.1 inches at 1.0 and 7.3 inches at 1.2, being between 5.1 and 10.2 percent of the rotor radius, appearing over a speed band the aircraft crosses in a few seconds.

One approximation in this estimate should be stated and its effect is not what it first appears. The induced velocity used is the hover value, and induced velocity falls as forward speed builds, so the true skew angle is larger than the table says. That moves both clearing speeds down together rather than only the canard’s, since both are proportional to the induced velocity. The band shifts to lower airspeed and keeps its width in ratio, and it does not widen.

Rotor downwash on the horizontal stabiliser is a known effect on conventional helicopters [Prouty, Helicopter performance, stability and control] [Padfield, Helicopter flight dynamics] [Minervino et al 2016], and stabilisers whose incidence is varied in flight are studied as a treatment for rotor loads and trim [Gandhi and Sekula 2004] [Voskuijl and Verhagen 2017]. On the X-50A the surface concerned spans two thirds of the rotor diameter and is sized to carry the entire aircraft, so the effect is not a trim nuisance. It is a large moment produced by a large surface, and it appears in the speed range between hover and conversion entry.

Dependent Systems

The canard rotor wing depends on three systems that a conventional helicopter does not need in this form. They are an airframe that carries both a small rotor and two large lifting surfaces, a reaction drive that turns the rotor through its tips without a shaft, and a blade section that must work as an aerofoil with the flow arriving from either edge. Each of them is described here together with what it costs the configuration, since each was chosen because the rotor has to stop.

The Aircraft

The X-50A was unmanned, 17.7 feet long, 6.5 feet high and weighed 1,460 pounds. It carried a two-bladed teetering rotor twelve feet in diameter, an 8.9 foot canard and an 8.1 foot horizontal tail, and was powered by a single Williams F112 turbofan [The revolutionary Boeing Canard Rotor/Wing aircraft begins flight testing] [Dragonfly canard rotor wing unmanned aerial vehicle, Federation of American Scientists]. The general encyclopaedia gives a maximum speed of 700 kilometres per hour, about 380 knots, and a cruise speed of 278 kilometres per hour, about 150 knots [Boeing X-50 Dragonfly], and an operational aircraft of the type was described as flying in excess of 375 knots [Dragonfly canard rotor wing unmanned aerial vehicle, Federation of American Scientists]. Conversion was described near 120 knots [Dragonfly canard rotor wing unmanned aerial vehicle, Federation of American Scientists] and computed at 130 knots [Pandya and Aftosmis 2001].

The speed range is the configuration’s central difficulty stated as arithmetic. The lift a wing must produce is fixed and the dynamic pressure available is not, so the required product of area and lift coefficient scales inversely with the square of speed.

\[S \, C_L = \frac{W}{q} = \frac{2W}{\rho V^2}\]

At 150 knots that product is 19.17 square feet and at 380 knots it is 2.99, a ratio of

\[\frac{(S C_L)_{\text{cruise}}}{(S C_L)_{\text{max}}} = \left( \frac{V_{\text{max}}}{V_{\text{cruise}}} \right)^{\!2} = \left( \frac{380}{150} \right)^{\!2} = 6.42\]

and the maximum speed itself is only

\[M = \frac{V}{a} = \frac{641.4}{1116.4} = 0.574\]

at sea level, so compressibility is not what sizes this wing. The wing is sized by the requirement to be a rotor, and every fixed-wing condition it meets afterwards finds it enormously oversized. The oversizing is no criticism of the design. It defines the configuration.

The sources disagree about the weight and the disagreement is small but real. Boeing states 1,460 pounds [The revolutionary Boeing Canard Rotor/Wing aircraft begins flight testing]. The encyclopaedia entry states an empty weight of 1,265 pounds and a gross weight of 1,422 pounds [Boeing X-50 Dragonfly]. The spread between the two gross figures is 38 pounds, or 2.7 percent, and it moves the computed disc loading from 12.9 to 12.6 pounds per square foot. No conclusion in this article turns on the difference, and the larger figure is used throughout because it is the manufacturer’s own.

Nothing published gives a weight breakdown, against a design literature in which one is the starting point [Raymer, Aircraft design, a conceptual approach] [Anderson, Aircraft performance and design]. The encyclopaedia’s pair implies an empty weight fraction of 89.0 percent, which for an unmanned demonstrator carrying no payload is plausible and is not independently confirmed.

Driving a Rotor From Its Tips

What Reaction Drive Deletes

The X-50A had no gearbox, no driveshaft and no tail rotor. During rotary-wing flight the exhaust of the Williams F112 turbofan was diverted through the rotor hub, out along the blades and through nozzles at the tips [The revolutionary Boeing Canard Rotor/Wing aircraft begins flight testing] [Williams F112]. As the canard and tail took up the load the exhaust was progressively diverted to a nozzle at the rear [The revolutionary Boeing Canard Rotor/Wing aircraft begins flight testing].

The thrust a tip nozzle produces is reduced by its own motion, since the nozzle is already travelling at the tip speed when the gas leaves it.

\[T_{\text{tip}} = \dot{m} \, (V_j - \Omega R)\]

and the power delivered to the rotor is that thrust acting through the tip speed, summed over the blades.

\[P = N \, T_{\text{tip}} \, \Omega R\]

Those two expressions fight each other. Raising the tip speed raises the second and lowers the first, and the product has a maximum that no published figure for this aeroplane allows to be located.

A tip-driven rotor applies no torque to the airframe, because the force turning it acts at the blade tips rather than through a shaft. That deletes the anti-torque requirement entirely, and with it the tail rotor, its driveshaft, its gearbox and the power they consume. On a machine that also has to stop its rotor in flight this is more than a weight saving. A stopped shaft-driven rotor would still have a transmission attached to it, and the torque path would have to be broken and remade.

What It Charges Instead

The efficiency of a jet doing work on a body moving at speed $V$ is the Froude efficiency.

\[\eta = \frac{2}{1 + V_j / V}\]

For a tip jet the relevant body speed is the rotor tip speed. Neither the tip speed nor the exhaust velocity is published for this aeroplane, so the result is computed across the plausible ranges. At a tip speed of 700 feet per second and an exhaust velocity of 1,400 feet per second the efficiency is 0.667. At a tip speed of 500 and an exhaust velocity of 2,000 it is 0.400.

Taking a mechanical rotor transmission at an assumed efficiency of 0.97, an assumed value that no reviewed source attaches to any particular helicopter, the reaction drive costs a factor of between

\[\frac{0.97}{0.667} = 1.5 \qquad \text{and} \qquad \frac{0.97}{0.400} = 2.4\]

in the power required to turn the rotor. The estimate is first-order and ignores the pressure losses of ducting hot gas through a rotating hub and along a rotating blade, which are real and make the true penalty worse.

The idea had already flown at transport scale. The Fairey Rotodyne, first flown in 1957, drove its rotor with tip jets for take-off, landing and hover, and was cancelled in 1962 after failing to attract firm orders, in part over the noise of its tip jets [Fairey Rotodyne].

And the arithmetic above has a flight test attached to it. The Hughes XV-9A flew on tip jets in 1964 and 1965, the tests were judged satisfactory, and the aircraft was noisy and burned a great deal of fuel. Hughes could not mitigate either and stopped developing pressure-jet systems [Hughes XV-9] [Cohan and Hirsh 1966].

The flight test is consistent with the arithmetic above but does not measure it. A qualitative report that an aircraft was thirsty does not isolate the Froude efficiency from the duct losses, the gas generator cycle or the disc loading, and no source consulted gives the XV-9A’s specific fuel consumption against a shaft-driven comparison. What the flight test establishes is that the penalty was large enough to end the programme, forty years before the X-50A was asked to pay it again.

This is why reaction drive keeps being reinvented and keeps not winning. The weight it saves is immediate and visible on a drawing. The fuel it burns is a factor of 1.5 to 2.4, and it appears only in the range column.

The engine is a cruise missile turbofan rated at 732 pounds of thrust [Williams F112]. Against a gross weight of 1,460 pounds the raw thrust-to-weight ratio is 0.50, so the aeroplane cannot hover on direct jet thrust. The rotor is what makes vertical flight possible at all, converting that thrust into about twice as much lift, and the article’s disc-loading arithmetic is the measure of how hard it has to work to do so.

The Section That Has to Work in Both Directions

When the rotor stops, one blade points left and the other points right. The flow arrives at both from the front. On one of them it arrives over what was the trailing edge.

A conventional aerofoil has a rounded leading edge and a sharp trailing edge and is useless backwards. The canard rotor wing therefore used an elliptic section, blunt at both ends [Pandya and Aftosmis 2001] [Dragonfly canard rotor wing unmanned aerial vehicle, Federation of American Scientists]. That section is described for the type as a compromise between the optimum shape for rotor flight and that for high-speed stopped-rotor flight [Dragonfly canard rotor wing unmanned aerial vehicle, Federation of American Scientists]. It is optimal for neither.

The section’s thickness is given nowhere in the material consulted. Elliptic sections in this survey run from six percent thick [Alexander et al 2005] through ten and fifteen percent [Angle et al 2008] [Rodman and Wood 1986] to twenty-three percent [Graham et al 2011], so the type of section fixes no particular thickness. The section exists because a blade that must work in reverse flow cannot have a sharp edge anywhere, and the blade also carried the engine’s exhaust to nozzles at its tips [The revolutionary Boeing Canard Rotor/Wing aircraft begins flight testing].

The planform is as awkward as the section. A stopped two-bladed rotor is a wing of twelve foot span and very large chord, so its aspect ratio

\[A\!R = \frac{b^2}{S} = \frac{b^2}{b \, c} = \frac{b}{c}\]

is between 3 and 6 for a chord between four and two feet, well below the aspect ratios of light aeroplanes and sailplanes. A wing that stubby loses a large part of its lift-curve slope, which Helmbold’s relation gives as

\[a = \frac{2 \pi A\!R}{2 + \sqrt{A\!R^2 + 4}}\]
Chord Aspect ratio Lift-curve slope, per radian Loss against two-dimensional
2 feet 6.0 4.53 27.9 percent
3 feet 4.0 3.88 38.2 percent
4 feet 3.0 3.36 46.5 percent

So the surface that has to carry the aeroplane in high-speed flight gives away between a quarter and a half of its lift-curve slope to its proportions, before the elliptical section costs anything further. The rotor chord is not published either, making it the third of the four unpublished quantities this article has to work around.

The elliptical section is a better reverse-flow aerofoil than a conventional symmetric one, the reason it was chosen, but a worse aerofoil than either in the regimes where those are used. The stopped-rotor literature has been circling this compromise for decades [Biggers and Watts 1971] [Ballard et al 1980] [Lance et al 1991].

The Flight Test Record

The first airframe hovered for about eighty seconds in December 2003 at the United States Army Proving Ground at Yuma, Arizona [The revolutionary Boeing Canard Rotor/Wing aircraft begins flight testing] [Yuma Proving Ground]. The general encyclopaedia dates the first flight to 24 November 2003 [Boeing X-50 Dragonfly], while the designation directory dates the first hover flight to 4 December 2003 [Boeing X-50, Directory of U.S. Military Rockets and Missiles], and the manufacturer’s announcement of that date describes the flight as made that day [The revolutionary Boeing Canard Rotor/Wing aircraft begins flight testing]. No source consulted reconciles the two dates.

On its third flight, on 23 March 2004, the first airframe was destroyed [Boeing X-50 Dragonfly] [Boeing X-50, Directory of U.S. Military Rockets and Missiles]. The cause was recorded as cross coupling of the rotor controls [Boeing X-50, Directory of U.S. Military Rockets and Missiles] [Second Boeing X-50A Dragonfly Canard Rotor/Wing prototype completes hover flight].

The second airframe flew once in November 2005 and twice in December [Boeing X-50, Directory of U.S. Military Rockets and Missiles] [Second Boeing X-50A Dragonfly Canard Rotor/Wing prototype completes hover flight]. On 12 April 2006, on the sixth of eleven planned test flights, it was destroyed at the same range [Boeing X-50 Dragonfly]. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency attributed the loss to a lack of low-speed control [DARPA pulls plug on X-50 stopped-rotor concept, FlightGlobal], in flight dynamics terms a shortfall of control power against a moment [Etkin and Reid, Dynamics of flight] [Garren et al 1965], and the investigation found that the fuselage was subject to an aerodynamic pitching moment of extreme sensitivity, with both airspeed and rotor wake producing a nose-up pitching motion greater than the flight controls could compensate for [Boeing X-50 Dragonfly].

DARPA withdrew funding in September 2006 [DARPA pulls plug on X-50 stopped-rotor concept, FlightGlobal].

The flight count is nine or twelve, and no flight completed a conversion. The encyclopaedia’s eleven planned flights may include the three of 2005, which gives nine in all, while the designation directory places a series of eleven in the first quarter of 2006, which gives twelve if the sixth flight is counted within that series [Boeing X-50 Dragonfly] [Boeing X-50, Directory of U.S. Military Rockets and Missiles]. One press report describes the second airframe as crashing during transition [X-50A Dragonfly concept canned, New Atlas], while the agency’s attribution to low-speed control and the planned culmination of the 2006 series in the first full transition both place the loss before any conversion [DARPA pulls plug on X-50 stopped-rotor concept, FlightGlobal] [Boeing X-50, Directory of U.S. Military Rockets and Missiles].

Comparison With Ground Prediction

The Computation Named the Mechanism

In 2001, five years before the second loss, two researchers at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Ames Research Center published an inviscid computational study of this exact aeroplane at its conversion condition [Pandya and Aftosmis 2001]. They solved the Euler equations on Cartesian meshes of roughly nine million cells, at seven rotor azimuth positions covering a quarter turn, at Mach 0.1986 and zero angle of attack.

They found that the rotor was indeed unloaded and that the canard and horizontal tail could carry the weight of the aircraft, which was the question they were asked [Pandya and Aftosmis 2001]. They also found something they were not looking for.

They identified upwash from the forward fuselage as a source of positive pitching moment on the rotor, and they wrote that no change to the geometry of the hub area can relieve the upwash from the forward fuselage, and that the effect of the upwash is therefore the limiting case for the load variations experienced by this vehicle [Pandya and Aftosmis 2001].

A nose-up pitching moment produced by the forward fuselage, which no local geometry change can remove [Pandya and Aftosmis 2001]. Five years later the second airframe was lost to a nose-up pitching moment of extreme sensitivity attributed to the fuselage [Boeing X-50 Dragonfly].

It Also Cleared the Margin

The same paper finds that the total variation in pitching moment can be controlled with approximately two degrees of elevon deflection [Pandya and Aftosmis 2001].

The mechanism was identified correctly and the margin was assessed as adequate. One of those two judgements survived contact with the aeroplane.

These Are Not the Same Flight Condition

The honest statement of the relationship is narrower than the coincidence suggests, and the article states it narrowly.

The 2001 computation was performed at 130 knots, in conversion [Pandya and Aftosmis 2001]. The agency attributed the 2006 accident to a lack of low-speed control, which places it in the regime between hover and conversion entry [DARPA pulls plug on X-50 stopped-rotor concept, FlightGlobal]. These are different flight conditions, and a result computed at one does not transfer to the other. The paper was not wrong about the case it examined. It was never asked about the case that mattered.

That is the finding, one about where analysis effort goes rather than about a mistaken calculation. The X-wing’s recorded lesson was that the severe loads arrive during conversion, and specifically during the last few revolutions when the rotor turns slowly, which is how the 2001 computation records the X-wing work [Pandya and Aftosmis 2001]. The community believed conversion was the hard part, because the previous programme had said so. So conversion was computed, and wind-tunnel tested, and cleared. The low-speed regime was the part everybody already knew how to do.

A further limitation lies in the method rather than the framing. The Euler equations carry no viscosity. A hemispherical hub beneath a stopped rotor above a bluff fuselage is a separation problem, and an inviscid solver cannot represent separation. The paper is explicit that it is inviscid and does not overclaim [Pandya and Aftosmis 2001], and the limitation is recorded here because the sensitivity that killed the aeroplane is of the kind an inviscid method cannot see.

The paper also states that its force and moment values could not be published, being proprietary, so its figures carry no numbers on the vertical axis [Pandya and Aftosmis 2001]. The only public computational assessment of this aeroplane’s conversion loads among the sources consulted is therefore unavailable in magnitude to anybody outside the programme.

What the Data Changed

The flight data changed where the programme’s danger was understood to lie, and they changed nothing about the question the programme was funded to answer. No flight of either airframe completed a conversion, so the record holds no measurement of a rotor stopping or starting in flight [Boeing X-50 Dragonfly].

The first loss was a finding about the helicopter half of the aeroplane. The first airframe was destroyed on its third flight, on 23 March 2004, and the recorded cause was cross coupling of the rotor controls [Boeing X-50, Directory of U.S. Military Rockets and Missiles]. Nothing in that cause concerns the conversion.

The second loss overturned the margin judgement that the analysis had made, though not at the condition where it was made. The 2001 computation found that the variation in pitching moment at 130 knots could be controlled with approximately two degrees of elevon deflection [Pandya and Aftosmis 2001]. The agency attributed the loss on 12 April 2006 to a lack of low-speed control [DARPA pulls plug on X-50 stopped-rotor concept, FlightGlobal], and the investigation found a nose-up pitching moment of extreme sensitivity produced by airspeed and rotor wake [Boeing X-50 Dragonfly]. Flight therefore did not test the clearance at conversion speed. It showed that the margin in the regime between hover and conversion entry was inadequate, and the comparison with ground prediction above argues that the analysis effort had passed over that regime.

The data do not confirm the mechanism this article proposes for that pitching moment. The accident finding names airspeed and rotor wake [Boeing X-50 Dragonfly]. The route through the tail remaining in the wake after the canard has left it is an inference from the configuration, and the discussion of where the framing breaks down lists it as one.

The last change the record shows is the termination. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency withdrew funding in September 2006 [DARPA pulls plug on X-50 stopped-rotor concept, FlightGlobal], so no redesign answering the low-speed finding was ever flown. The research question posed at the outset leaves this programme exactly as it entered it, and the record supports no statement about whether the conversion would have worked.

Aerodynamics of wings and bodies

The general literature every aeroplane in this series draws on. Lift, drag, aerofoils, boundary layers, separation, wind tunnel technique and pressure measurement. A machine whose wing is also its rotor inherits this literature twice, once for each thing the surface has to be.

Handling qualities and rotorcraft flight test

How a rotorcraft is judged rather than merely measured. Handling qualities criteria, pilot rating scales, flight test technique, simulation and envelope expansion. Nine or twelve flights are the whole flight record of this programme, according to how the sources’ eleven planned flights are read, so the methodology literature is larger than the data it would have been applied to.

Rotor aeromechanics, blade loads and airloads

How a rotor is actually computed. Blade element and momentum theory, inflow models, free wake methods, flapping and comprehensive analysis, and the hover performance that follows from them. The relation that governs this article is elementary in this discipline, being that lift falls with the square of rotor speed, and its consequences are not.

Computational methods and the limits of inviscid analysis

The methods that cleared this aeroplane, and the reason a clearance is not a guarantee. Euler and Navier-Stokes solvers, Cartesian and unstructured meshes, grid convergence and validation. The one public computation of this aeroplane’s conversion solved the Euler equations, which carry no viscosity and therefore no separation.

Rotor wake, airframe interaction and download

What a rotor does to whatever sits underneath it. Interactional aerodynamics, wake impingement on tail surfaces, download and inflow. This aeroplane put two large lifting surfaces directly beneath a small rotor, and this cluster holds the literature for what that costs in hover and in the transition out of it. Heyson and Katzoff’s 1957 report on the induced velocities near a lifting rotor is in this cluster, and it compares those velocities with flow measurements, which is the flow field the wake skew estimate above simplifies.

High-speed rotorcraft configurations compared

The alternatives, including the two this series has already covered. Tiltrotors, coaxial advancing-blade designs, compound helicopters and vertical takeoff configurations generally. Compound helicopters of the X-49’s kind are in this cluster, and so is the tiltrotor that outlived both programmes.

Vibration, fatigue and the loads a rotor imposes

The loads a rotor sends into the airframe, and what happens as it slows. Oscillatory hub loads, aeroelasticity, flutter and transient loading. The X-wing’s recorded lesson was that the worst loads arrive during the last few revolutions, when the rotor turns slowly and the flow has time to respond.

Reaction drive, tip jets and blown rotors

The second declared family, and the oldest idea in the aeroplane. Tip jets, pressure jets, reaction drive, circulation control and blown surfaces. Driving a rotor from its tips deletes the gearbox, the driveshaft and the tail rotor at once, and this cluster holds the literature for what it charges in their place.

Low aspect ratio wings and what they can carry

The geometry a rotor turns into when it stops. Low aspect ratio, slender and delta planforms, finite span effects and lifting-line theory. A twelve-foot rotor is a twelve-foot wing, and a wing of that span on an aeroplane of this weight is a stub rather than a wing.

Canard and close-coupled lifting surfaces

The surfaces that had to carry the aircraft while the rotor stopped. Canard and wing interference, upwash, downwash, close-coupled, tandem and joined arrangements, and forebody effects. A canard is unusual on a rotorcraft and mandatory on this one, because the weight has to go somewhere during conversion.

Elliptical and thick aerofoils, and flow that reverses

The section a stopped rotor is forced to use. Elliptical, blunt and symmetric profiles, reverse flow, leading-edge separation bubbles and thick sections. The X-50A’s rotor section was elliptic, because a blade that becomes a wing must work with the flow arriving from either edge.

The rotor speed limit, advance ratio and retreating blade stall

The limit the previous article was about, approached from the other side. Advance ratio, the reverse flow region, retreating blade stall, slowed rotors and blade loading. The X-49 tried to raise the advance ratio a rotor can survive. The X-50 tried to pass through every value of it, which is a different problem with the same variable.

Stopped rotors, the X-wing and the conversion problem

The article’s own subject. Stopped, stoppable, stowed and convertible rotors, the X-wing, the canard rotor wing, conversion corridors and rotor unloading. The likely reason it is not larger is that the idea has been tried roughly once a decade since the 1960s and abandoned every time, so the literature is a series of separate beginnings rather than an accumulation.

Unmanned aircraft and the flight control systems they carry

What this aeroplane was, and it matters to the accident. Unmanned and remotely piloted vehicles, autonomous hover and flight control system design. There was no pilot aboard to be surprised, and equally none to feel a divergence beginning before an instrument reported it.

Performance, power required and the engine installation

The propulsion side, which on this aeroplane is also the transmission side. Power required and available, turbofan installation, transmissions, exhaust systems and propulsive efficiency. The engine drives the rotor through the exhaust rather than through a shaft, so installation and propulsion are the same subject here.

Weight, sizing and what a configuration costs

A small cluster, and the article says why. Weight estimation, sizing, conceptual design and design trades. No weight breakdown for this aeroplane was ever published, so the sizing arguments here are made from first principles against a single published gross weight rather than from a statement of what the vehicle actually weighed.

The atmosphere and the flight condition

The medium, named rather than assumed. Standard atmosphere properties, density altitude and the speed of sound. This cluster exists because the one published Mach number for this aeroplane is only consistent with its airspeed above sea level, so the atmosphere bears on a figure the article checks.

Other rotorcraft and aeronautical literature

The residual, reported and not hidden, and small. Rotorcraft titles that treat the rotorcraft as a whole, in conference volumes, technology surveys and a computer description of one helicopter, and four titles too terse to place in any other cluster, which are kept because they could bear on this subject and name nothing else.

Research programmes, demonstrators and the centres that ran them

The institutional record behind demonstrators like this one. Rotorcraft research centres, the NASA rotorcraft research programme, technology investment reviews, and the design and flight of other single-purpose demonstrators, among them a forward-swept wing and a joined wing. The X-50A was a demonstrator of exactly this kind, built to show one thing rather than to enter service.

Where the Framing Breaks Down

The chain of reasoning in this article is a chain of plausible inferences and not a demonstrated causal account, and five links are weaker than the others.

First, the article claims the wake-skew pitch-up mechanism without direct evidence that it was the mechanism. The accident finding is a nose-up pitching moment from airspeed and rotor wake exceeding control authority [Boeing X-50 Dragonfly]. That the specific route was the tail remaining in the wake as the canard left it is consistent with the geometry, but no source consulted about this aeroplane states it. It is an inference from configuration, offered as one.

Quantifying it does not make it evidence. The clearing speeds, the skew angles and the equivalent centre of gravity shift are computed above, and none of that establishes that this is what happened to either airframe. An arithmetically detailed inference is still an inference, and the numbers show only that the proposed mechanism is of the right size to matter rather than that it operated.

Second, the surface areas are derived and not published. The canard and tail areas are computed from the requirement to carry the aircraft at the published conversion speed, under an assumed lift coefficient range. If the real surfaces are substantially larger, because they were sized by a stall margin rather than by cruise lift, then the download and moment arguments strengthen. If they are smaller, the arguments weaken. The spans are published and the areas are not, and the spans alone carry the geometric part of the argument.

Third, four quantities this aeroplane needs are unpublished and every result depending on them is a range. The rotor tip speed governs the advance ratio at conversion entry, the hover and advancing tip Mach numbers and the reaction drive efficiency. The tip-jet exhaust velocity governs that efficiency with it, and the range is wide enough that the conclusion there is qualitative rather than quantitative. The rotor chord governs the aspect ratio and the lift-curve slope of the stopped rotor as a wing. The longitudinal stations of the canard and tail, and their height below the rotor, govern the wake clearing speeds.

The keystone rests on the last of those four, which is also the quantity whose weakness matters least. The ratio between the two clearing speeds is independent of both the induced velocity and the surface height, so the claim that the tail stays in the wake to several times the canard’s clearing speed survives any error in those two, although the factor of seven moves with the estimated surface stations. The absolute speeds do not, and the article gives them as a range for that reason.

Fourth, the connection between the 2001 paper and the 2006 accident is a connection of mechanism and not of flight condition. The section comparing the analysis with flight states it at length, because that is where this article would most easily overclaim.

Fifth, the claim that the Hughes rotor/wing appears in no secondary account of the X-50 is a claim about a particular set of sources and not about the world. Its basis is the set of sources consulted for this article, namely the manufacturer’s announcements, the specialist designation directory, the Federation of American Scientists, GlobalSecurity, the general press and the general encyclopaedia. One of them does reach the propulsion half of the ancestry, naming the XV-9A’s reaction drive among the experience Boeing drew on, and none names the rotor/wing [X-50 Dragonfly Canard Rotor/Wing, GlobalSecurity.org]. A history of the programme outside those sources may well make the connection, and the safe form of the claim is that the ancestry is absent from the accounts most readily available and present in the contractor reports.

A sixth item is smaller and should be recorded anyway. The one Mach number published for this aeroplane’s conversion condition, being 0.1986 at 130 knots, corresponds to a speed of sound of about 1,105 feet per second rather than the sea level value of 1,116.4 [U.S. Standard Atmosphere] [U.S. Standard Atmosphere, 1976]. Recomputing 130 knots against the sea level speed of sound gives Mach 0.1965. The two figures in the source are mutually consistent only at a standard-atmosphere altitude of about three thousand feet, where the temperature is about six kelvin below its sea level value. The paper states no altitude, and the discrepancy is noted so that a reader recomputing the number is not confused by it.

The Source Base

The survey rests on 5,952 research records assembled from Crossref, the NASA Technical Reports Server and the Defense Technical Information Center, of which 1,195 are report primaries, being 20.1 percent, by the identifier rule set out under The Definition of Primary. The split is 415 from the first and 780 from the second. The median publication year is 2005. Of the 5,747 dated records, 526 were published before 1970, the decade of the Hughes rotor/wing, being 9.2 percent, and 1,862 were published in 2015 or later, being 32.4 percent.

The Configuration’s Ancestry Is in the Report Literature

The X-50A was the third serious attempt at a stopped rotor, not the second. Reading about the aeroplane produces the X-wing as its predecessor, because that is the predecessor the aeroplane’s own literature names. The repositories produce an older one.

Hughes proposed a tip-jet driven rotor/wing in 1965, developed it as a research aircraft design through 1968, and offered it as city-centre transport in 1967. The propulsion was flight-proved on the XV-9A in 1964. The rotor/wing appears in no secondary account of the X-50 consulted for this article, although one account names the XV-9A’s reaction drive among the experience Boeing drew on [X-50 Dragonfly Canard Rotor/Wing, GlobalSecurity.org], and the Defense Technical Information Center holds the rotor/wing under hot cycle rotors rather than under anything that names the X-50.

It also gives the reaction-drive argument a flight test. The XV-9A worked and was abandoned as noisy and thirsty, which is the Froude efficiency being paid forty years before this aeroplane was asked to pay it again.

The Wake Skew Estimate Has a Period Measurement Behind It

The relation the keystone turns on is the momentum-theory skew of the wake, and the flow field it simplifies was measured in the period. Heyson and Katzoff’s 1957 report converts the induced velocities of a uniformly loaded rotor to nonuniform disk loadings and compares them with flow measurements [Heyson and Katzoff 1957]. Further reports on inflow modelling, wake geometry and rotor-fuselage interaction support the same analysis [Chen 1989] [Wind tunnel investigation of helicopter-rotor wake effects on three helicopter fuselage models] [Berry and Althoff 1990] [Overview of helicopter wake and airloads technology].

Where the Report Literature Sits

The report literature on this subject belongs to one period and one medium. Stopped rotors, wake skew, empennage immersion and control power were worked out by NASA, the Army and the Navy between roughly 1955 and 1995 and issued as technical notes and contractor reports, which Crossref indexes poorly.

The share by cluster is uneven and the unevenness is informative rather than a defect.

All clusters 5,952 1,195 20.1 percent

Research programmes, demonstrators and the centres that ran them sit highest at 70.0 percent, because a programme’s record is itself a set of reports, followed by weight, sizing and what a configuration costs at 42.1 percent and performance, power required and the engine installation at 39.1 percent, because sizing and performance are what a contractor writes a report about. The three lowest are the atmosphere and the flight condition at 2.7 percent, unmanned aircraft and the flight control systems they carry at 4.3 percent, and computational methods and the limits of inviscid analysis at 4.9 percent, because standard atmospheres are standards, unmanned aircraft are recent, and computational fluid dynamics is a conference and journal literature. None of those numbers is a statement about coverage. All of them are statements about publication habits in a discipline.

Two clusters remain low. The article’s own subject, being stopped rotors and the conversion problem, sits at 13.7 percent, and control power sits at 11.0 percent against 935 records. The likely reading is that the modern literature on control authority is a journal literature and that the stopped-rotor reports are thin because the programmes were few. That is an inference about the literature and not a measurement of it.

The Designation Directory

The specialist designation directory has an entry for the X-50, and it is the source for the claim that the number was chosen for its roundness. It has no page for the X-49, so the gap there is a fact about that aeroplane rather than about the directory.

The Definition of Primary

Primacy is a property of the document, and this survey derives it from the identifier. A record is a report primary when its address is on the NASA Technical Reports Server or it carries a digital object identifier under the 10.21236 prefix, which Crossref registers for Defense Technical Information Center reports. The contractor report on the Hughes rotor/wing composite research aircraft and both XV-9A reports are report primaries under that rule, and so are the X-wing reports and the 2001 computation. The rule does not reach the society papers among the foundational sources, such as the 1965 and 1967 Hughes rotor/wing papers and the 1993 canard rotor/wing concept paper [Rutherford et al 1993], so 20.1 percent is a lower bound on how much of the survey is first-hand.

Thin Subjects

Six subjects that this article’s derivations depend on have thin literatures. Each count below is the number of research records in this survey whose title carries at least one of the listed terms, with a hyphen read as a space. Where a row joins two groups of terms with the words together with, a title must carry a term from each group.

Subject Title terms counted Records
the efficiency and fuel cost of a tip-jet drive tip jet, tip jets, pressure jet, pressure jets, hot cycle, reaction drive, reaction driven together with efficiency, efficient, fuel, consumption 2
the propulsive efficiency of a jet Froude efficiency, propulsive efficiency 1
the skew of a rotor wake in forward flight wake skew, skewed wake, wake skew angle, skew angle, skewed flow, skewed inflow 1
a rotor wake on the horizontal tail horizontal tail, stabilizer, stabiliser, stabilator, tailplane, empennage, tail unit, T tail together with wake, wakes, downwash 7
the loads on a rotor that is stopping stop, stops, stopped, stopping, stoppable together with load, loads, loading, airloads 0
the weight breakdown of an aircraft weight estimation, weight estimating, weight breakdown, weight fraction, empty weight, group weight, group weights 2

The penalty of reaction drive is computed here rather than cited. Two titles join a tip-jet term to an efficiency or fuel term, and one of them concerns the efficiency of a computation rather than of the drive, so the factor of 1.5 to 2.4 derived above rests on the Froude relation and on the XV-9A’s recorded fuel consumption rather than on a measured comparison.

The Froude efficiency is a textbook relation with almost no title of its own. The one title that names propulsive efficiency concerns flapping wings.

The skew of the wake is named in one title, an actuator-disc study of optimum rotor performance in skewed flow, so the clearing-speed estimate rests on momentum theory and on the period measurements of induced velocity rather than on a literature of wake skew as such.

The tail in the rotor wake is a small literature, and none of it names the transition. Of the seven titles, five name a rotor, and none names transition, conversion or pitch-up, which is the regime in which the second airframe was lost.

No title names the loads on a rotor as it stops. The X-wing work that found the worst loads in the last revolutions is recorded in the introduction of the 2001 computation [Pandya and Aftosmis 2001] rather than in a title of its own.

A weight breakdown is the starting point of the design literature, and two titles name one, both volumes of one structural weight estimation program of 1974, which is consistent with the absence of any published breakdown for this aeroplane.

What the Survey Admits

A record is admitted only when a person reading its title finds it on this article’s subject, which is the stopped rotor and the rotorcraft, wing, wake, propulsion, control and flight test literature the analysis above draws on. Many words this subject depends on also name something else, and a record that shares only such a word is excluded. Rotor also names the rotors of turbomachinery, of electric machines and of the machine shafts studied in rotordynamics. Lift also names petroleum gas lift, sealift, pallet lifts, voltage lift converters and the surgical face lift. Wing also names a military unit and a political tendency. Wind tunnel also names the civil wind engineering of buildings, bridges and pollutant dispersion, bluff body also names the bluff bodies that hold flames in a combustor, and flight test also names the shuttle and balloon flights of scientific instruments. Dragonfly also names the NASA mission to Titan, and only the testing of that mission’s rotor is kept. Elliptical also names elliptic curves and elliptical galaxies, canard is also a duck, hub is also a gene, wake is also the opposite of sleep and conversion also names energy and chemical conversion. Actuator saturation and cross-coupling also name control problems in electrical machines, ground robots, spacecraft and trains, and cross-coupling names a reaction in palladium-catalysed chemistry as well. Medical studies are excluded even where their subjects are helicopter crews. Correction, erratum, addendum and withdrawal notices, and the index and back matter of books, are excluded too, because a survey counts research works and those are editorial events or parts of works. Reviews of books, dictionary and other reference entries of two pages or fewer, news and other notices, and a second deposit of a document already in the survey are not admitted either, while an authored encyclopedia article of more than two pages and a textbook chapter are research works and stay. A signed comment on a paper, a discussion of it and its author’s reply are research works, since each argues about a result, and are admitted when their subject is, while an unsigned discussion and a referee’s report on a manuscript are not.

Records on flight-vehicle subjects this article does not use are excluded as well. These are icing, crashworthiness, avionics and navigation, displays and crew workload, rotor and airframe noise other than the noise of tip jets, maintenance and health monitoring, manufacturing and structural design, armament and stores, operations and procurement, supersonic and hypersonic flight, and space launch and re-entry. So are applications of the same physics to things that are not flight vehicles, such as wind and water turbines, ships, road vehicles, buildings and turbomachinery.

Some records of doubtful relevance are kept. Control theory on actuator saturation that names no application shares the control power cluster’s subject, multirotor and quadrotor aerodynamics and control are counted as rotorcraft literature throughout, and aerofoils known from wind energy are kept where the title names only the section, so a reader may weigh each accordingly.

The residual cluster admits only rotorcraft titles that treat the rotorcraft as a whole, and four titles too terse to place. Every residual title that names a narrower subject is listed in that subject’s cluster.

Every research title has been read for relevance, so the off-topic share that remains is a matter of reading judgement. A reading of titles cannot show that a work is relevant in substance, so this is a statement about titles only.

Epistemic State

Historical Fact

The programme dates, the cost-sharing arrangement, the dimensions, the engine, the two crash dates, the recorded causes and the termination are drawn from the manufacturer’s announcements, the specialist designation directory, the Federation of American Scientists, the general press and the general encyclopaedia, and are consistent across them except at the points noted, namely the month of the agreement, the date of the first flight, the dates of the X-wing’s contract and cancellation, the total number of flights, and whether the second loss occurred during a transition. The investigation finding on the second loss, and the placing of the first loss on that airframe’s third flight, rest on the general encyclopaedia alone, which draws both from one 2007 magazine article [Boeing X-50 Dragonfly].

The Hughes hot cycle rotor/wing of 1965 to 1968 and the flight of the XV-9A in November 1964 are equally matters of record, and they are drawn from the contractor reports themselves rather than from any account of the X-50.

Verified by Independent Derivation

Everything in this article expressed as a number is computed from published inputs and is reproducible from them. That covers the disc area, disc loading and its ratio to the X-49A, the induced velocity, the slipstream velocity and its dynamic pressure, the dynamic pressure at conversion, the required lifting area and its share of the disc, the span fractions, the reverse flow area fraction and the advance ratios at which the retreating tip reverses and the whole disc reverses, the advancing tip Mach numbers, the square law of rotor lift against rotor speed, the download in all three drag cases, the induced power and the power at two figures of merit, the wake skew angles, the clearing speeds and the ratio between them, the equivalent centre of gravity shift, the Froude efficiencies and the penalty against a gearbox, the aspect ratios and Helmbold lift-curve slopes, the area and lift coefficient product at cruise and maximum speed, the thrust-to-weight ratio, and the programme arithmetic.

Analysis

The identification of surface sizing as the link between conversion safety and hover difficulty. The reading of the reaction drive trade, which the section on reaction drive computes and the XV-9A’s abandonment on noise and fuel independently supports. The assessment of the elliptical section as a compromise optimal for neither regime. The claim that a wing sized to be a rotor is enormously oversized for every fixed-wing condition it afterwards meets.

Inference

The wake-skew mechanism for the nose-up pitching moment. The relationship between the 2001 computational finding and the 2006 accident, argued as a shared mechanism across different flight conditions. The claim that analysis effort was directed at conversion because the X-wing had taught that conversion was the hard part.

The longitudinal stations and vertical drop used in the wake-skew calculation are estimated from overall dimensions and are not published, so the clearing speeds are a range. The ratio between them is free of the induced velocity and the vertical drop but still depends on the stations, so it is the firmer result without being exact.

What the Record Does Not Settle

Whether the conversion would have worked. The manoeuvre was never performed in flight by any of the three programmes that set out to try it. Nothing in the flight record bears on the question the programme was funded to answer, and this article makes no claim about it in either direction.

Nor does the record settle what the X-50A’s rotor tip speed, tip-jet exhaust velocity or rotor chord were, or where its canard and tail sat along and below the rotor. Every result depending on those four quantities is reported as a range for that reason, and each says so where it appears.

Out of Scope

Rotor system structural design and blade manufacture, the detailed control law implementation, the ducted propulsor family covered in the previous article, rotor icing, the human factors of rotorcraft displays, and the wider unmanned combat aircraft programmes of the same period.

The last two are named because the literature on hover, rotors and unmanned aircraft contains both in quantity. Records whose subject is a display or an unmanned combat programme are excluded from the survey, while records on control laws that also name a display or a combat vehicle remain in the handling qualities and control power clusters, and the article’s argument draws on neither subject, because the X-50A carried no pilot to read a display and existed to demonstrate one manoeuvre.

Conclusion

The X-50A Dragonfly took a round designation on the claim that it was half helicopter and half aeroplane. It never demonstrated the aeroplane half, and it was destroyed twice doing the helicopter half.

The two facts are connected, and the connection is the size of the tail surfaces. Stopping a rotor in flight is survivable only if the rotor is unloaded first, and unloading it means something else must carry the aircraft at conversion speed. On a machine this small that means a canard and a tail spanning three quarters and two thirds of the rotor diameter, sitting under a rotor whose disc loading is 1.33 times the X-49A’s, because the same surface has to serve as a wing at 380 knots. The configuration that makes conversion safe puts two large lifting surfaces in a fast slipstream, and then asks the flight control system to hold the aircraft steady while the wake skews off one of them and stays on the other.

The second airframe was lost in that speed range, and the first to its rotor controls in rotor-borne flight. The 2001 computational study had already named the forebody upwash as a source of nose-up pitching moment and had already said that no local geometry change could remove it. What it had not been asked was whether the same mechanism had enough authority against it at low speed, because the X-wing had taught everybody that conversion was where the danger lived.

Three programmes across forty years have the same result to report. Hughes designed a tip-jet rotor/wing between 1965 and 1968, and no record that it was built appears in the material reviewed here. Sikorsky built an X-wing and never flew it with its rotor turning. Boeing built two Dragonflies, flew them at least nine times and converted neither.

None of the three programmes stopped and restarted a rotor in flight. The manoeuvre has been demonstrated in a wind tunnel, more than thirty times on one X-wing rotor in 1979, and the record consulted here holds no flight in which a rotor was both stopped and restarted, the nearest being the 2013 prototype that spun up a locked rotor from fixed-wing flight [Hybrid RotorWing conducts in-flight fixed/rotary transition, Rotor & Wing].
