The X-51A Waverider flew four times, and on the flight that worked the engine under test supplied about eleven percent of the vehicle’s kinetic energy. A twenty-six second rocket burn supplied the other eighty-nine, and the scramjet took two hundred and ten seconds to add its share [Boeing X-51 Waverider] [Boeing X-51A WaveRider sets record with successful fourth flight] [X-51 scramjet engine demonstrator, GlobalSecurity].

This is the fifty-second article in the X-Planes series, following the X-1, the X-2, the X-3, the X-4, the X-5, the X-6, the X-7, the X-8, the X-9, the X-10, the X-11, the X-12, the X-13, the X-14, the X-15, the X-16, the X-17, the X-18, the X-19, the X-20, the X-21, the X-22, the X-23, the X-24, the X-25, the X-26, the X-27, the X-28, the X-29, the X-30, the X-31, the X-32, the X-33, the X-34, the X-35, the X-36, the X-37, the X-38, the X-39, the X-40, the X-41, the X-42, the X-43, the X-44, the X-45, the X-46, the X-47, the X-48, the X-49, and the X-50.

The share is no criticism of the engine, since it describes what the experiment was. The X-51A was not built to accelerate anything. It was built to find out whether a scramjet can keep running. Its answer came in two parts. Changing the engine from its starting fuel to its working fuel was itself a hazard, and a failure at that change ended one of the three flights that attempted it. Once the engine was running on its working fuel, what ended each run was a seal around the engine or an empty tank, and on the causes the Air Force published it was never the combustion.

The Research Question

Can a supersonic combustion ramjet run long enough, on a storable fuel, to be a propulsion system rather than a demonstration.

The Question This Article Inherits

The previous scramjet in this series left a claim unfinished. The X-43 reached Mach 9.68 on gaseous hydrogen [Voland et al 2005], a figure often rounded to Mach 9.6 [NASA X-43] [Marshall et al 2005] [Marshall et al 2005] [McClinton et al 2001] and its engine ran for about eleven seconds [Voland et al 2005], which the Mach 10 flight overview gives as approximately ten [Marshall et al 2005], and that article recorded that eleven seconds on hydrogen has not demonstrated a propulsion system, because the thermal problem at length is a different problem.

The X-51A is the experiment that tests that claim. It flew slower, on a fuel an aeroplane could carry, for nineteen times as long.

\[\frac{210}{11} = 19.1\]

On the ten second figure the ratio is 21.0, and every comparison below that rests on it would strengthen.

The article finds that the earlier claim was right, and right for an arithmetic reason.

Programme Origin

The Air Force Research Laboratory had been working on hydrocarbon scramjets since the 1990s under a programme called HyTech, and in 2004 selected a Boeing and Pratt and Whitney Rocketdyne team to build a flight demonstrator [Air Force Research Laboratory] [X-51 scramjet engine demonstrator, GlobalSecurity] [Boeing X-51 Waverider]. The X-51 designation was allocated on 27 September 2005 [Boeing X-51, Directory of U.S. Military Rockets and Missiles] [X-51 scramjet engine demonstrator, GlobalSecurity]. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, abbreviated NASA, and the Air Force all had a stake [Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency] [Boeing X-51 Waverider], and that agency treated the X-51 as the predecessor of a more ambitious vehicle called Blackswift which was cancelled in October 2008 [DARPA Blackswift].

Four vehicles were built and the programme cost about three hundred million dollars across nine years [X-51 scramjet engine demonstrator, GlobalSecurity]. Every one of the four ended in the Pacific [Boeing X-51 Waverider].

The name is a claim about the shape. A waverider is a configuration whose leading edge is attached to its bow shock, so that the high pressure behind that shock stays underneath the vehicle and becomes lift instead of leaking away around the edges [Waverider] [Sandlin and Pessin 1993].

Sizing From First Principles

No detailed design data for the X-51A has been published [Boeing X-51, Directory of U.S. Military Rockets and Missiles], so this vehicle cannot be sized from its drawings and is sized here from the physics of its flight condition instead. Its three subsections take the stagnation temperature that forbids a subsonic combustor at Mach 5.1, the attached oblique shock that makes the forebody part of the inlet, and the heating rate that a long burn turns into a heat load. Every figure is computed from published inputs, the standard atmosphere and stated material properties, and Where the Framing Breaks Down, near the end, records which of them rest on properties this vehicle never published.

Why a Scramjet Cannot Slow the Air Down

An ordinary jet engine slows the incoming air to a low subsonic speed before burning fuel in it. Around Mach 3 to 4 the compressor stops being useful and ram compression takes over, and above about Mach 5 the combustion itself is kept supersonic [Scramjet], and a single relation explains why.

\[\frac{T_0}{T} = 1 + \frac{\gamma - 1}{2} M^2\]

Stagnation temperature is what the air arrives with and no amount of ducting changes it. Bringing the flow to rest converts the whole of its kinetic energy into heat, and at the X-51A’s cruise condition that gives

\[T_0 = T \left( 1 + \tfrac{\gamma - 1}{2} M^2 \right) = 216.65 \times 6.202 = 1{,}343.7 \ \mathrm{K}\]

being 1,070.5 degrees Celsius before a drop of fuel has been added, the static temperature at both cruise altitudes being taken from the standard atmosphere [U.S. Standard Atmosphere] [U.S. Standard Atmosphere, 1976]. At the X-43’s Mach 9.68 and its altitude of about 110,000 feet [Voland et al 2005], where the standard atmosphere gives 232.4 kelvin, the same relation gives 4,588.4 kelvin, or 4,315.2 degrees Celsius, and

\[\frac{T_{0,\text{X-43}}}{T_{0,\text{X-51}}} = 3.41\]

Air at four thousand kelvin is not air any more. Oxygen begins to dissociate appreciably above about two thousand kelvin [Anderson, Hypersonic and high-temperature gas dynamics], and a gas whose molecules have been pulled apart absorbs the energy of combustion into reassembling itself rather than into pushing on a nozzle.

The pressures involved show why the flow is not stopped. Bringing the flow to rest isentropically would raise its pressure by

\[\frac{p_0}{p} = \left( 1 + \frac{\gamma - 1}{2} M^2 \right)^{\!\gamma / (\gamma - 1)} = 594\]

and its density by a factor of 95.8. A duct that captured that flow and stopped it would be holding 594 times the ambient pressure, which at the fourth flight’s altitude is about 42 atmospheres, at more than a thousand degrees. It would be a pressure vessel.

The dynamic pressure has a form that needs no density at all.

\[q = \tfrac{1}{2} \rho V^2 = \tfrac{1}{2} \gamma p M^2\]

At Mach 5.1 that is 18.2 times the static pressure, and the cruise value on the fourth flight was 2,750 pounds per square foot, against 1,640 on the first, because the fourth flight was flown ten thousand feet lower where the air is 1.62 times denser [Boeing X-51A WaveRider breaks record in first flight] [X-51 scramjet engine demonstrator, GlobalSecurity].

So the flow is not slowed to subsonic. It is slowed a little, burned while still supersonic, and expanded. For this reason the engine has no rotating machinery, no compressor and no turbine [Scramjet] [Heiser and Pratt, Hypersonic airbreathing propulsion] [Curran and Murthy, Scramjet propulsion] [Anderson, Hypersonic and high-temperature gas dynamics].

The same reason keeps a scramjet from starting at a standstill. There is no machinery to compress anything, so the compression has to be done by going fast, and going fast has to be done by something else.

The Shape Is the Inlet

On a hypersonic vehicle the forebody is part of the engine. The compression the engine needs is done by the shock system standing off the underside of the vehicle, and the waverider shape exists so that the shock stays attached to the leading edge and the compressed air stays underneath [Cockrell et al 1995] [Cockrell 1993].

The relation governing an attached oblique shock is the theta-beta-Mach relation.

\[\tan \theta = 2 \cot \beta \, \frac{M_1^2 \sin^2 \beta - 1}{M_1^2 (\gamma + \cos 2\beta) + 2}\]

The flow responds not to the free-stream Mach number but to its component normal to the shock.

\[M_{n1} = M_1 \sin \beta\]

and that component alone determines the pressure rise.

\[\frac{p_2}{p_1} = 1 + \frac{2 \gamma}{\gamma + 1} \left( M_{n1}^2 - 1 \right)\]

For a given free-stream Mach number and a given wedge angle there are two attached solutions, and in practice the weaker one occurs, and above a maximum deflection angle there is no attached solution at all and the shock stands off as a bow wave [Anderson, Modern compressible flow]. A waverider is a shape designed backwards from a chosen shock. The method makes the shape unusual, and the shape works only near the Mach number it was cut for.

Putting a scramjet on a waverider is a separate and small literature [Rasmussen and Soares 1989] [Cockrell 1994] [Chang 1992].

The consequence for the engine is that the inlet has no independent existence. A change in angle of attack moves the shock, which changes what the inlet swallows, which changes the combustor. The forebody, the inlet, the combustor and the afterbody nozzle are one device, and a bookkeeping error in the drag of the first is a bookkeeping error in the thrust of the last [Anderson, Modern compressible flow] [Bertin, Hypersonic aerothermodynamics].

Heat Is a Rate, and Duration Turns It Into a Load

This is the article’s centre.

Stagnation-point heating scales approximately as the square root of density and the cube of velocity, and the Sutton and Graves correlation puts a constant on it.

\[\dot{q} = 1.7415 \times 10^{-4} \sqrt{\frac{\rho}{R_n}} \, V^3\]

The nose radius is not published and a waverider wants it small [Boeing X-51, Directory of U.S. Military Rockets and Missiles], so the result is a range. At the fourth flight’s condition, with density 0.1163 kilograms per cubic metre and velocity 1,504.9 metres per second,

\[R_n = 5 \ \mathrm{mm} \Rightarrow \dot{q} = 2.86 \ \mathrm{MW/m^2} \qquad R_n = 50 \ \mathrm{mm} \Rightarrow \dot{q} = 0.91 \ \mathrm{MW/m^2}\]

A surface that has to lose that by radiation alone reaches

\[T_{\text{rad}} = \left( \frac{\dot{q}}{\varepsilon \sigma} \right)^{\!1/4}\]

giving 2,545 degrees Celsius for the sharp edge and 1,840 for the blunt one, taking emissivity as 0.8. Both are far above the melting range of a nickel superalloy, 1,290 to 1,350 degrees Celsius for INCONEL alloy 625 [INCONEL alloy 625, Special Metals Corporation].

The two temperatures state the waverider’s central compromise [Vanmol and Anderson 1992]. The shape wants a sharp leading edge, because a sharp edge is what keeps the shock attached and the compressed air underneath. The thermal problem wants a blunt one, because heating goes as the inverse square root of the radius. The vehicle has to be sharp enough to work and blunt enough to survive, and no setting of that dial is comfortable.

By that measure the X-43 was far worse off than the X-51. On velocity alone, the X-43 flying at 2,958.5 metres per second at its Mach number and altitude,

\[\frac{\dot{q}_{\text{X-43}}}{\dot{q}_{\text{X-51}}} \approx \left( \frac{2958.5}{1504.9} \right)^{\!3} = 7.60\]

and a comparison of the two aeroplanes usually stops at that number. The X-43 flew hotter. It flew more than three times hotter in stagnation temperature and more than seven times harder in heating rate.

But heat is not a rate. It is the integral of a rate.

\[Q = \int_0^{t} \dot{q} \, \mathrm{d}t\]

And the two flights differ by a factor of nineteen in the upper limit. Taking the heating rates as constant across each burn, which overstates neither case badly,

\[\frac{Q_{\text{X-51}}}{Q_{\text{X-43}}} = \frac{19.1}{7.60} = 2.51\]

The slower aeroplane absorbed more than two and a half times as much heat. The programme turns on that sentence. It means that an eleven second flight and a two hundred and ten second flight are not the same experiment conducted for different lengths of time. They are different experiments.

Heat has to get into the structure, and how far it gets depends on the square root of time. The diffusion length for a solid of thermal diffusivity $\alpha$ after a time $t$ is

\[\delta \approx \sqrt{\alpha t}\]

and for a nickel superalloy, whose diffusivity is about 3.5 millionths of a square metre per second, the two flights differ like this. The manufacturer’s conductivity, density and specific heat for INCONEL alloy 625 give 2.8 millionths at room temperature and 4.6 millionths at 982 degrees Celsius [INCONEL alloy 625, Special Metals Corporation], so 3.5 is a mid-range value.

\[\delta_{\text{X-43}} = \sqrt{(3.5 \times 10^{-6})(11)} = 6.2 \ \mathrm{mm} \qquad \delta_{\text{X-51}} = \sqrt{(3.5 \times 10^{-6})(210)} = 27.1 \ \mathrm{mm}\]

a ratio of

\[\frac{\delta_{\text{X-51}}}{\delta_{\text{X-43}}} = \sqrt{\frac{210}{11}} = 4.37\]

Six millimetres is a skin. Twenty-seven millimetres is not something an aeroplane can carry as dead mass, and that difference separates the two experiments.

A short flight is a structures problem you can solve with heat capacity. Put enough mass in the leading edge and the heat will not have reached the far side of it before the flight is over. A long flight is a heat transfer problem [Schlichting and Gersten, Boundary-layer theory], because the heat arrives at the far side, the structure comes into equilibrium, and the energy has to go somewhere other than into the metal.

Hence the actively cooled structural panel became a research subject, and its literature dates from the 1970s [Koch and Pagel 1978] [Smith and Beuyukian 1979] [Ellis et al 1978].

Dependent Systems

The engine under test could not start itself, reach its operating point or cool itself, and each of those functions was supplied by another system. A B-52 carried the vehicle to about fifty thousand feet, a surplus Army rocket motor accelerated it to about Mach 4.8, and the 270 pounds of Jet Propellant 7, JP-7, aboard was both the fuel and the coolant of the engine [Boeing X-51, Directory of U.S. Military Rockets and Missiles] [Boeing X-51A WaveRider sets record with successful fourth flight] [Boeing X-51 Waverider] [Boeing X-51A WaveRider breaks record in first flight]. Those dependencies are the subject of this section’s two subsections. The seal, the fuel transition and the fin latch that ended three of the four flights are taken under The Flight Test Record, and What the Data Changed concludes that the engine itself ended one flight, at its change of fuel, while the structure, the airframe and the fuel supply ended the other three.

Something Else Did Most of the Work

The X-51A was carried to about fifty thousand feet under the wing of a B-52 and dropped. A surplus rocket motor from an Army tactical missile then accelerated it to about Mach 4.8 in twenty-six seconds [MGM-140 ATACMS] [Boeing X-51A WaveRider sets record with successful fourth flight] [X-51 scramjet engine demonstrator, GlobalSecurity].

At that point the booster fell away and the scramjet lit, and took the vehicle from Mach 4.8 to Mach 5.1 [Boeing X-51A WaveRider sets record with successful fourth flight].

The arithmetic is short. Kinetic energy goes as the square of speed, so the share of the final energy each stage supplied is

\[\frac{E_{\text{boost}}}{E_{\text{cruise}}} = \left( \frac{V_{\text{boost}}}{V_{\text{cruise}}} \right)^{\!2} = \left( \frac{4646.8}{4937.2} \right)^{\!2} = 0.886\]

The rocket supplied 88.6 percent of the kinetic energy in twenty-six seconds. The scramjet supplied 11.4 percent in two hundred and ten, taking

\[\frac{210}{26} = 8.08\]

times as long to do an eighth as much.

A cruise engine is not an accelerator, and the X-51A was demonstrating cruise. The split does show what the vehicle was, and it exposes the eventual operational question. An air-breathing engine that adds about eleven percent of the energy still needs a rocket to reach its own operating point.

Where the Heat Went, and What It Cost

It went into the fuel. The X-51A’s engine was fuel-cooled [X-51 scramjet engine demonstrator, GlobalSecurity], its JP-7 passing through the walls of the engine before being injected [Jp-7], so the fuel cooled the structure and was itself heated and cracked on the way. Cracking a heavy hydrocarbon into lighter fragments absorbs energy [Hill and Peterson, Mechanics and thermodynamics of propulsion] [Glassman 1998]. The fuel is called endothermic for that reason, and the cracked products shorten the ignition delay in the combustor [Dinda et al 2021].

One tank did two jobs. The vehicle carried 270 pounds of JP-7 [Boeing X-51 Waverider], which is

\[\frac{270}{4000} = 6.75\%\]

of its empty weight, and that same 270 pounds was the engine’s coolant [Boeing X-51A WaveRider breaks record in first flight].

The fourth flight burned the tank dry and stopped because it did [Boeing X-51A WaveRider sets record with successful fourth flight], so its average consumption is measured.

\[\dot{m}_f = \frac{270}{210} = 1.286 \ \mathrm{lb/s}\]

The cooling that fuel flow provides is finite and computable. Taking the physical and endothermic heat sink of a cracked hydrocarbon fuel at 2,500 to 3,500 kilojoules per kilogram, which a review of the endothermic fuel literature gives for fuels of eight to fifteen carbon atoms, or 1,075 to 1,505 British thermal units per pound [Dinda et al 2021] [Petley and Jones 1990] [Morris et al 2002], the cooling power available while the engine runs is

\[P_{\text{cool}} = \dot{m}_f \, h_{\text{sink}} = 1.286 \times (1075 \ \text{to} \ 1505) = 1{,}382 \ \text{to} \ 1{,}935 \ \mathrm{Btu/s}\]

being between 1,458 and 2,041 kilowatts.

Here is the coupling that makes the configuration hard. The same fuel releases at least 18,700 British thermal units per pound when burned, the minimum net heat of combustion its specification sets [Jp-7], so the heat it can absorb is

\[\frac{h_{\text{sink}}}{h_{\text{combustion}}} = \frac{1075 \ \text{to} \ 1505}{18700} = 5.7\% \ \text{to} \ 8.0\%\]

of the heat it releases. The coolant capacity of the system is between a twelfth and a seventeenth of the energy the system is producing, and the two are the same substance, and you cannot increase one without spending the other.

The Flight Test Record

The X-51A flew four times between 26 May 2010 and 1 May 2013, and only the first and fourth flights sustained scramjet operation. Every vehicle ended in the Pacific, so the record consists of what the telemetry returned and what the programme announced [Boeing X-51 Waverider] [Boeing X-51A WaveRider sets record with successful fourth flight]. Its subsections take the three flights that ended early in date order, then a table of all four, then what the fourth flight’s published numbers imply about the engine.

The First Flight Ended at a Seal

On 26 May 2010 the first vehicle reached Mach 5 at seventy thousand feet and ran its engine for 143 seconds, about ten times longer than any scramjet had flown before [X-51 scramjet engine demonstrator, GlobalSecurity] [Boeing X-51A WaveRider breaks record in first flight]. The manufacturer’s release on the day gave more than two hundred seconds of powered flight [Boeing X-51A WaveRider breaks record in first flight], and another account gives 140 seconds under scramjet power [Boeing X-51 Waverider], so the engine time is the later figure and not the first one announced. It was cut short by an apparent thermal seal breach at the interface between the rear of the engine and its nozzle, which let hot gas that should have been making thrust leak into the rear of the vehicle, and the vehicle had also accelerated more slowly than expected [Modified X-51A Waverider ready for next hypersonic test, United States Air Force] [X-51 scramjet engine demonstrator, GlobalSecurity].

The engine grows about three quarters of an inch when it comes up to temperature [Modified X-51A Waverider ready for next hypersonic test, United States Air Force] [X-51 scramjet engine demonstrator, GlobalSecurity]. Against a vehicle twenty-five feet long [Boeing X-51 Waverider] that is

\[\frac{0.75}{300} = 0.25\%\]

of the overall length, and a seal at that interface has to stay sealed through that growth while hot gas is on one side.

The engine’s length is not published, and the growth implies it [Boeing X-51, Directory of U.S. Military Rockets and Missiles]. Thermal expansion is

\[\Delta L = \alpha L \, \Delta T\]

so solving for the length that gives three quarters of an inch, at a linear expansion coefficient of 15.6 millionths per kelvin, the mean for INCONEL alloy 625 between room temperature and 821 degrees Celsius [INCONEL alloy 625, Special Metals Corporation], and a temperature rise of eight hundred kelvin,

\[L = \frac{\Delta L}{\alpha \, \Delta T} = \frac{0.75}{(15.6 \times 10^{-6})(800)} = 60 \ \mathrm{in} = 5.0 \ \mathrm{ft}\]

a plausible engine for a twenty-five foot vehicle, offered as a consistency check on the published growth rather than as a measurement of anything.

A scramjet has no moving parts and this is what replaces them. The absence of a compressor and a turbine is the configuration’s chief virtue, and what it substitutes is a structure that changes shape by a quarter of a percent while carrying a temperature difference of a thousand degrees, at every joint, for as long as the flight lasts. The problem is one of duration, and an eleven second flight never meets it.

The Second Flight Ended at the Fuel Transition

On 13 June 2011 the second vehicle suffered an inlet unstart as its engine changed fuel. The booster brought it to just over Mach 5, and the engine lit on ethylene, the easily ignited starting fuel, and was attempting the transition to JP-7 when the inlet unstarted [Second hypersonic flight ends prematurely, brings new flight test data, United States Air Force] [Boeing X-51 Waverider]. The vehicle oriented itself for a restart, the restart failed, and it flew on under control until it struck the ocean, so the engine never reached full power [Second hypersonic flight ends prematurely, brings new flight test data, United States Air Force]. The Air Force announced a review of the telemetry to find the cause, and none of the sources cited here reports what that review found.

The same change had worked once already. On the first flight the engine lit on a mix of ethylene and JP-7 and then ran on JP-7 alone [X-51 Waverider makes historic hypersonic flight, United States Air Force], and a trade report of the second flight records that the first had also suffered an inlet unstart, about 110 seconds after ignition, from which the engine recovered [Second X-51 hypersonic flight ends prematurely, Flight International].

An unstart is the inlet ceasing to swallow the flow it was built to swallow. The internal contraction of a supersonic inlet can only be so large before the shock system cannot be pushed inside it, and past that limit the shock is expelled forwards, the captured mass flow collapses, and the pressure rise propagates upstream in a fraction of a second [Holland 1994] [Foster et al 2012].

The limit is computable and it is tighter than intuition suggests. A fixed-geometry inlet must be able to swallow its own shock system, and the test is whether the throat can pass the flow after a normal shock has stood at the entrance and destroyed most of its total pressure. The isentropic area relation

\[\frac{A}{A^*} = \frac{1}{M} \left[ \frac{2}{\gamma + 1} \left( 1 + \frac{\gamma - 1}{2} M^2 \right) \right]^{(\gamma + 1) / 2(\gamma - 1)}\]

gives 27.07 at Mach 5.1, and a normal shock at that Mach number leaves only 5.72 percent of the total pressure, which enlarges the sonic area by the inverse of that fraction. Requiring the throat to be at least the enlarged sonic area gives the Kantrowitz condition,

\[\frac{A_{th}}{A_i} \ \geq \ \frac{1}{(p_{02}/p_{01}) \, (A/A^*)_{M_1}} = 0.646\]

so the throat cannot be smaller than about two thirds of the capture area, and the internal contraction cannot exceed about 1.55. A designer wanting more compression than that has to get it outside the inlet, on the forebody, and that requirement is the other reason for this vehicle’s shape.

There is a second way to unstart an engine and it comes from the back. Adding heat to a duct drives the flow towards Mach one whichever side of it the flow starts on. This is Rayleigh flow, and enough heat release chokes the duct thermally [Anderson, Modern compressible flow]. A thermal choke is a pressure rise that travels forwards, and the transition from a light starting fuel to the real fuel changes how much heat is released and where.

The isolator exists to hold that off. It is a constant-area duct between inlet and combustor whose job is to contain a shock train, so that the pressure rise from combustion has somewhere to sit without reaching the inlet throat [Heiser and Pratt, Hypersonic airbreathing propulsion]. Its length is a design margin against the engine unstarting itself, and the fuel transition at which the second flight failed changes exactly that pressure rise. The sources cited here do not say whether the second flight’s unstart began at the inlet or was driven forwards from the combustor, so the flight shows that the engine failed at its change of fuel and does not show which of the two mechanisms acted.

The Third Flight Ended at a Latch

On 14 August 2012 the third vehicle was lost when an upper right control fin unlocked in flight. The vehicle became uncontrollable and was destroyed [Boeing X-51 Waverider] [X-51 scramjet engine demonstrator, GlobalSecurity]. It lost control before the scramjet engine could be lit, so the third flight never tested the engine [Boeing X-51 Waverider].

A fin unlocked. Not an unstart, not a flameout, not a thermal failure of the flowpath. A control surface that was supposed to be held in place was not held in place [Boeing X-51 Waverider].

The Flight Record

Flight Date Outcome Powered seconds
1 26 May 2010 Mach 5 at 70,000 feet, cut short by a thermal seal breach 143
2 13 June 2011 Inlet unstart during the transition from ethylene to JP-7, restart unsuccessful none sustained
3 14 August 2012 Upper right fin unlocked, control lost none
4 1 May 2013 Mach 5.1 at 60,000 feet, tank burned dry 210

The fourth flight was flown over the Point Mugu sea range and ended in a controlled dive into the Pacific [Naval Air Station Point Mugu] [Boeing X-51A WaveRider sets record with successful fourth flight].

Total powered flight across the programme was 353 seconds. Against three hundred million dollars that is

\[\frac{300 \times 10^6}{353} = \$849{,}858 \ \text{per second}\]

of scramjet operation. The figure is offered as a measure of how expensive this kind of knowledge is and not as a judgement, since the alternative to buying it was not buying it.

What the Flight Says About the Engine

The sources cited here give no thrust, no specific impulse and no lift-to-drag ratio [Boeing X-51, Directory of U.S. Military Rockets and Missiles]. The programme published a burn time, a fuel load, two Mach numbers and an altitude, and those are enough to bound the rest.

Start with what the fuel implies about the air. A kerosene-class fuel burns stoichiometrically at about 0.0682 pounds of fuel per pound of air, the ratio that the oxygen demand of a hydrocarbon of average formula $\mathrm{C_{12}H_{23}}$ gives with oxygen at 23.14 percent of air by mass, so at an equivalence ratio of one the engine was swallowing

\[\dot{m}_{\text{air}} = \frac{\dot{m}_f}{\phi \, f_{\text{st}}} = \frac{1.286}{0.0682} = 18.9 \ \mathrm{lb/s}\]

and twice that if it ran at half stoichiometric.

The accounting for such an engine is done in stream thrust rather than in thrust, because the forebody and the afterbody are part of the engine and there is no station at which a thrust gauge could be placed [Curran and Craig 1973] [Heiser and Pratt, Hypersonic airbreathing propulsion].

Now the range relation, which for a cruising air-breather is Breguet’s.

\[R = V \, I_{sp} \, \frac{L}{D} \, \ln \frac{W_0}{W_1}\]

The vehicle carried 270 pounds of fuel on a 4,000 pound empty weight [Boeing X-51 Waverider], so the mass ratio is 1.0675 and its logarithm is 0.0653. The powered distance is the cruise speed multiplied by the burn time,

\[R = (1504.9)(210) = 316 \ \mathrm{km} = 171 \ \mathrm{nmi}\]

and solving the range relation for what the vehicle must have had gives a product rather than a value.

\[I_{sp} \, \frac{L}{D} = \frac{R}{V \ln (W_0 / W_1)} = 3{,}215\]

The programme published neither factor and the flight cannot separate them. At a lift-to-drag ratio of 3 the specific impulse is 1,072 seconds. At 2 it is 1,607 and at 4 it is 804.

The acceleration gives the more telling number. The vehicle accelerated from Mach 4.8 to Mach 5.1 over the 210 seconds, so the net force it averaged was

\[F_{\text{net}} = \frac{m \, \Delta(\tfrac{1}{2} V^2)}{t \, V} = 167 \ \mathrm{lbf}\]

which against the measured fuel flow is a net specific impulse of

\[I_{sp,\text{net}} = \frac{F_{\text{net}}}{\dot{m}_f} = \frac{167}{1.286} = 130 \ \mathrm{s}\]

This is a lower bound and it omits the climb, because the altitude at booster separation is not published and any climb is energy the engine also had to supply.

One hundred and thirty seconds against an engine that was producing between eight hundred and sixteen hundred. The difference is drag.

\[\frac{I_{sp,\text{net}}}{I_{sp}} = 8.1\% \ \text{to} \ 16.1\%\]

Between 84 and 92 percent of what the engine made went into pushing the vehicle through the air rather than into speeding it up. Such a figure is ordinary for a cruise vehicle, which by definition is spending its thrust on drag. The figure is stated here because it shows where a running engine’s output went, and it describes the engine only on the one flight on which the engine ran until its fuel was gone.

Comparison With Ground Prediction

The programme published almost nothing that it predicted before flight, so the comparison this record supports is narrow, and most of it is a comparison with a target rather than with a measurement. No thrust, no specific impulse, no lift-to-drag ratio and no internal flowpath geometry appear in the sources cited here, so there is no ground prediction of engine performance against which the four flights can be set.

The one stated target is the burn time, and flight fell short of it. The programme aimed at a three hundred second burn [Boeing X-51 Waverider], the first flight reached 143 seconds and the fourth reached 210, and the subsection below shows that the 270 pound tank could not have supplied three hundred seconds at the fuel flow the fourth flight used. The target and the tank disagreed, and only a flight that burned the tank dry could expose it. One account describes the vehicle’s fuel as a 240 second supply [X-51 scramjet engine demonstrator, GlobalSecurity], a figure also shorter than the target.

The ground facilities could not reproduce the flight gas, which made the flights necessary. As What the Data Changed records below, a combustion-heated facility changes the composition of the gas the engine breathes and an open-jet facility interacts with its model [Andrews et al 1985] [Albertson and Emami 2001]. Flight returned what the tunnels could not. A hydrocarbon-fuelled scramjet runs for 210 seconds at Mach 5 with its fuel as coolant [Boeing X-51A WaveRider sets record with successful fourth flight], and the change from the starting fuel to JP-7 succeeded on two of the three flights that attempted it [X-51 Waverider makes historic hypersonic flight, United States Air Force] [Second hypersonic flight ends prematurely, brings new flight test data, United States Air Force] [Boeing X-51A WaveRider sets record with successful fourth flight].

The article’s first-principles figures are not predictions of this vehicle and cannot be scored against it. The Kantrowitz limit of about two thirds of the capture area bounds any fixed-geometry inlet at Mach 5.1, but no inlet contraction ratio was published, so the second flight’s unstart cannot be set against it. The three quarters of an inch of engine growth is a published figure, and the article does not record whether it came from ground test or from flight, only that the seal at that interface was breached on the first flight. The heat flux, radiation temperatures and penetration depths in the subsection headed Heat Is a Rate, and Duration Turns It Into a Load rest on a nose radius and material properties the programme never published.

What flight did return about the engine is a bound rather than a check. The earlier subsection on what the flight says about the engine derives from the fourth flight a product of specific impulse and lift-to-drag ratio of 3,215 and a net specific impulse of 130 seconds, and those are the only engine performance figures this article can state. They have no published ground counterpart, so they measure the vehicle and test no prediction of it.

The Fuel Ran Out Before the Clock Did

The programme’s target was a three hundred second burn and no flight achieved it [Boeing X-51 Waverider]. The first reached 143 seconds and the fourth reached 210, being

\[\frac{143}{300} = 47.7\% \qquad \frac{210}{300} = 70.0\%\]

At the fourth flight’s demonstrated consumption, three hundred seconds would have required

\[m_f = \dot{m}_f \, t = 1.286 \times 300 = 385.7 \ \mathrm{lb}\]

which is 42.9 percent more fuel than the vehicle carried. The 300 second goal and the 270 pound tank were not compatible at the flow rate the engine used. The article does not know which of the two was the later number, and notes only that the flight which succeeded ran the tank dry rather than running out of objectives.

What the Data Changed

The programme established that a hydrocarbon-fuelled scramjet will run for two hundred and ten seconds at Mach 5 in flight, cooled by its own fuel. No vehicle had done it before, and the manufacturer announced it as the longest scramjet-powered hypersonic flight in history [Boeing X-51A WaveRider sets record with successful fourth flight].

That it had to be established in flight at all is a fact about ground facilities. A combustion-heated facility supplies the enthalpy by burning something, which changes the composition of the gas the engine is asked to breathe, and an open-jet facility interacts with the model it contains [Andrews et al 1985] [Albertson and Emami 2001] [Voland et al 1999]. A tunnel that reproduces the Mach number does not reproduce the enthalpy, or reproduces it with the wrong gas, and there is no arrangement of valves that fixes that.

It also showed, without setting out to, which subsystem limited each flight. The first was ended by a seal at the rear interface of the engine, the second by an inlet unstart during the engine’s change from ethylene to JP-7, the third by a fin latch before the engine was lit, and the fourth by the fuel running out as intended [Modified X-51A Waverider ready for next hypersonic test, United States Air Force] [Second hypersonic flight ends prematurely, brings new flight test data, United States Air Force] [Boeing X-51 Waverider] [X-51 scramjet engine demonstrator, GlobalSecurity]. The engine under test ended one of the three flights on which it was lit, and it did so at its change of fuel and not in steady running. On the two flights that reached steady running on JP-7, the published causes name no failure of the combustion.

The finding is narrower than a claim of maturity. Steady supersonic combustion of a storable fuel held for as long as the fuel lasted, but the change from the starting fuel to the working fuel failed once in three attempts, and the seal and the latch show that the ordinary components could end a flight as surely as the exotic one. Three attempts cannot give a reliability for the transition, and the article does not claim one. The problem is also not solved, because two hundred and ten seconds is three and a half minutes and an aircraft would need hours.

Supersonic combustion and the scramjet flowpath

The largest cluster, and the thing the programme existed to demonstrate. Supersonic combustion, isolators, shock trains, combustors, fuel injection into a crossflow, flameholding and mode transition between ramjet and scramjet operation, with the wider literature of ramjets, dual-mode engines and combined cycles of which the scramjet is one member.

This literature is large and was never the limiting item on any X-51A flight, which is the article’s argument stated as a shelf of paper. 191 of these titles name an isolator, a shock train or a pseudo-shock, the device whose length is the margin against the engine unstarting itself.

Heat as a load rather than a rate, and where it goes

The article’s argument lives here. Aerodynamic heating, heat flux, stagnation-point heating, thermal protection, ablation, active cooling and the thermal response of hot structures.

A heat flux is a rate and a heat load is its integral, and a vehicle that flies nineteen times longer than its predecessor at under a seventh of the heating rate still absorbs more than two and a half times as much heat.

Inlets, starting and the unstart that ended a flight

The second flight is in this cluster. Inlet starting, contraction ratio limits, the Kantrowitz criterion, mass capture, buzz and unstart.

An unstart is the inlet ceasing to swallow the flow it was designed to swallow, and it happens fast, and the engine behind it stops being an engine. 107 of these titles name unstart outright.

Flight control and what the vehicle did about it

The third flight is in this cluster. Control surfaces, actuators, control authority, guidance, stability augmentation and the control laws written for air-breathing hypersonic vehicles.

The literature is mostly control laws and hardly at all hardware. 137 of these titles name an adaptive, robust, sliding mode, backstepping, fuzzy, neural, observer-based or fault-tolerant law, and 29 name an actuator, a fin, a control surface, a bearing or a hydraulic system. The third vehicle was lost when an upper right fin unlocked, which is a latch rather than an aerodynamic limit, and no title in the survey names a latch.

Supersonic and hypersonic aerodynamics of bodies, wings and boundary layers

The aerodynamics of the flight regime itself. Supersonic and hypersonic flow over cones, blunt bodies, wings and lifting shapes, boundary layers and their transition, wakes, rarefied flow and the theory of hypersonic flow.

A hypersonic demonstrator returns data or it returns nothing, since there is no vehicle to inspect afterwards and every X-51A ended in the Pacific.

Ground facilities and how hypersonic flow is made on Earth

Where almost all of this subject’s knowledge comes from. Shock tunnels, arc-heated and combustion-heated facilities, free-jet and direct-connect testing, free-flight testing in tunnels, and the flow-quality and vitiation problems that make ground data hard to trust.

A ground facility that reproduces the Mach number does not reproduce the enthalpy, or reproduces it with the wrong gas, which is why flight test exists at all.

Fuel as coolant, and the endothermic heat sink

The coupling that makes a hydrocarbon scramjet possible and nearly impossible at once. Endothermic fuels, catalytic cracking, coking, thermal stability, regenerative cooling and aircraft thermal management.

The X-51A carried 270 pounds of JP-7 and that same 270 pounds was the engine’s coolant, so the fuel had to cool the engine on its way to being burned in it.

Shock and boundary layer interaction

Where the flowpath’s difficulties actually live. Shock impingement on boundary layers, separation, viscous interaction and the entropy layer.

An isolator exists because this interaction exists, and its length is chosen so that a shock train has somewhere to sit without reaching the inlet throat.

High-temperature materials and structures

The forebody is the inlet and the afterbody is the nozzle, so a drag bookkeeping error and a thrust bookkeeping error are the same error.

Boost, separation and getting to the start line

A scramjet cannot start from rest and this cluster is how the X-51A got to where it could work. Stage, booster and shroud separation, staging dynamics and the boosters that bring an air-breathing stage to its starting condition.

The atmosphere and the flight condition

The medium, named rather than assumed, and it matters more here than usual. Standard atmosphere properties, the density of the upper atmosphere and the speed of sound at altitude.

The two powered flights cruised at 70,000 and 60,000 feet, a factor of 1.62 in density, so a comparison that averages them away is not a comparison.

Where the Framing Breaks Down

Five things in this article are weaker than the rest and the article would rather say so than be caught at it.

First, the heat load ratio is a scaling argument and not a calculation. It treats the heating rate as constant across each burn and it uses the velocity term of a stagnation-point correlation while omitting the density term, on the grounds that the two vehicles flew at broadly comparable dynamic pressures. The X-43’s second powered flight is recorded at a dynamic pressure near a thousand pounds per square foot [Voland et al 2005] [Marshall et al 2005] and the X-51A’s fourth flight computes to 2,750, so the density term is not negligible. At the X-43’s altitude the standard atmosphere gives 0.0106 kilograms per cubic metre against 0.1163 for the X-51A, and the square root of that ratio, 3.30, would raise the X-51A’s flux relative to the X-43’s and its heat load ratio from 2.51 to about 8.3. The omission therefore works against the article’s conclusion rather than for it, so the ratio stated above is the conservative one.

Second, the heat sink figure is a literature range and not a measurement of this fuel. No source consulted gives the heat sink the X-51A’s fuel system realised, so 1,075 to 1,505 British thermal units per pound is taken from the open literature on endothermic hydrocarbons, in which JP-7 itself reaches 3,233 kilojoules per kilogram, or 1,390 British thermal units per pound, at 700 degrees Celsius [Dinda et al 2021]. The 5.7 to 8.0 percent result inherits that range entirely.

Third, the energy share computation uses the boost and cruise Mach numbers of the fourth flight and treats the vehicle mass as constant. It burned 270 pounds of a roughly four thousand pound vehicle during the cruise, so the mass falls by under seven percent, and accounting for it would move the scramjet’s share slightly. The conclusion that the rocket did the great majority of the work does not depend on that correction.

Fourth, five results in this article rest on material and mixture properties this vehicle never published. The thermal penetration depths use a diffusivity for the nickel superalloy class, the implied engine length uses an expansion coefficient and a temperature rise from the same class, the heat flux and radiation temperatures use a nose radius given only as a range and an assumed emissivity, and the air flow uses a stoichiometric ratio for kerosene rather than for JP-7. Each of those is stated where it appears and none is presented as a measurement of this aeroplane.

The penetration depth matters most, and it is also the most robust. Its ratio between the two flights is the square root of the ratio of burn times and depends on no material property at all, because the diffusivity cancels. The absolute depths depend on it entirely.

Fifth, the specialist designation directory records plainly that no detailed design data for the X-51A has been published [Boeing X-51, Directory of U.S. Military Rockets and Missiles]. There is no published internal geometry against a design literature in which one is the starting point [Raymer, Aircraft design, a conceptual approach], no inlet contraction ratio, no combustor length, no isolator length and no engine mass. Every statement in this article about the flowpath is therefore about scramjets in general and not about this one in particular, and the article has tried to keep those two registers apart.

The Source Base

The survey rests on 4,909 research records assembled from Crossref, the NASA Technical Reports Server and the Defense Technical Information Center, of which 987 are report primaries, being 20.1 percent, split 309 from the first and 678 from the second, by the rule set out under The Definition of Primary. The median publication year is 2008. Of the 4,793 dated records, 1,761 were published before 2000, being 36.7 percent, and 1,684 in 2015 or later, being 35.1 percent.

The Keystone Is Carried by the Journal Literature

The keystone rests almost entirely on journal literature rather than on reports. Counting research titles that contain scramjet or supersonic combustion, the survey holds 947, of which 84 are report primaries, being 8.9 percent, and of the 85 titles that contain endothermic or heat sink, 4 are, being 4.7 percent.

That is a fact about where hypersonic propulsion was published. The subject was worked out by NASA Langley, the Air Force Research Laboratory and their contractors between roughly 1960 and 2010 and issued as reports, while the modern journal literature on scramjet combustion is enormous and international. A survey balanced across both dilutes the primary fraction even when every record in it is on subject.

Fuel heat-sink measurement and engine cycle accounting are thin in the reports as well as in the journals. Of the 9 research titles that contain cycle analysis or specific impulse, 1 is a report primary. Both are things a contractor measures and does not publish, and this article’s arguments about both rest on a small number of documents which are named where they are used.

The Aeroplane Has Almost No Literature of Its Own

Two research titles in 4,909 name the X-51, one being the programme’s own account of the flight demonstration [Hank et al 2008] and the other a study of the thrust of a generic vehicle of its form [Choi and Driscoll 2024]. The X-49 article reports the same kind of finding for the X-49, and it is a fact about programme literature. Counting titles, the waverider shape is named in 157, supersonic combustion or the scramjet in 947, the sibling programme that this article compares against in 30, and the aeroplane that used all of it in two.

The programme’s own flight test account is held by the Defense Technical Information Center, which refuses automated requests, and an archived copy of the document is retrievable. It is the 2013 paper by the 412th Test Wing on the waverider ground and flight test [X-51A Scramjet Demonstrator Program, Waverider Ground and Flight Test, Defense Technical Information Center]. It reports that only the fourth of the four flights was fully successful, and it gives no cause for the outcomes of the first three.

The Definition of Primary

Primacy is derived from the identifier, and on no other ground. A record is a report primary when its address is on the NASA Technical Reports Server or it carries a digital object identifier under the 10.21236 prefix, which Crossref registers for Defense Technical Information Center reports. The rule reaches most of the sibling programme’s flight reports, 22 of the 30 titles that name the X-43 or Hyper-X, and it does not reach the journal papers in which the same laboratories published, so 20.1 percent is a lower bound on how much of the survey is first-hand.

Thin Subjects

Seven subjects that this article’s derivations depend on have thin literatures. Each count below is the number of research records in this survey whose title carries at least one of the listed terms, with a hyphen read as a space.

Subject Title terms counted Records
transient heat conduction into a structure transient heat, transient thermal, heat conduction, thermal penetration, penetration depth, heat soak, thermal soak 27
the seal at a hot joint and its thermal growth seal, seals, sealing, thermal expansion, differential expansion, thermal growth 52
the control fin, its actuator and its lock fin, fins, actuator, actuators, actuation, latch, latches, locking, freeplay, free play 46
the duration of a burn duration, durations, endurance 8
engine cycle accounting and stream thrust cycle analysis, specific impulse, stream thrust, force accounting, thrust accounting 11
radiation equilibrium of a hot surface radiation equilibrium, radiative equilibrium, radiatively cooled 1
the range relation of a cruising air-breather breguet, range equation 0

The seal is the first flight’s cause, and it is this article’s most concrete example of its own thesis. Of the 52 titles that name a seal or thermal growth, 10 name a hypersonic vehicle, a scramjet, an engine or an airframe.

The third flight’s cause has no title at all. Of the 46 titles on fins, actuators and their locks, none names a latch or a lock, and they treat fin aerodynamics and actuation.

Duration, the quantity the article turns on, is named in 8 titles, and none of them names a scramjet. They concern long-endurance and short-duration test facilities, flight telemetry and the thermal management of a long-endurance vehicle.

The accounting the article uses to bound the engine has 11 titles, and stream thrust, the method it names, appears in 1 of them. Transient conduction carries the distinction between a heating rate and a heat load, and 27 titles name it.

Two relations the article uses are settled rather than neglected. The range relation of a cruising air-breather is named in no title and radiation equilibrium of a hot surface in one, which is the shape a textbook subject takes.

Two subjects that are not thin carry the rest of the argument’s physics. Counting research titles that contain real gas, chemical kinetics, chemical nonequilibrium, dissociation, vibrational, high enthalpy or thermochemical, the survey holds 116, and counting those that contain high-temperature material, alloy, composite or ceramic, refractory, ceramic matrix, carbon-carbon or hot structure, it holds 76.

The claim that the engine was never the limiting item is not one a bibliographic survey can test, because a survey is a poor instrument for a claim about where a programme’s difficulty lay, and the X-45 article records the same limit for a negative claim of its own. The claim rests on four flight outcomes and their recorded causes, which is a small sample, and the Epistemic State says so.

What the Survey Admits

A record is admitted only when a person reading its title finds it on this article’s subject, meaning that it bears on a subject the argument uses, read in aeronautical, missile or high-speed flight, or as general theory and method with no application to an unrelated domain. The subjects are those of the clusters above.

The excluded records are mostly homonyms and distant domains, and the homonyms say something about this subject’s vocabulary, since nearly every technical word a scramjet uses is also used elsewhere. Specific impulse names electric and nuclear space propulsion and the chemistry of rocket propellants, inlet names the tidal inlets of a coast, the pelvic and thoracic inlets of anatomy and the particle separators of helicopter engines, endothermic names furnace atmosphere generators, thermal expansion names the mineralogy and solid-state physics of materials no aeroplane is built from, contraction ratio names microfluidics and metallurgy, shock names the physics of solids and explosives, seal names the shaft seals of turbines and of spacecraft mechanisms, Kantrowitz names a cardiac assist device and the physicist’s own oral histories, buzz names the noise of a fan, hypersonic names a class of small arms ammunition, and jet fuel names the toxicology of exposure to it and an engine starter. All of those are excluded.

Three classes are excluded because the section headed Out of Scope places them there, being hypersonic weapons policy and doctrine, glide vehicles treated by their guidance, control, trajectory, tracking or strategy, and rocket propulsion other than the booster. Aeronautics remote from the argument is excluded too, being turbine machinery as such, rotorcraft, subsonic transport and fighter programmes, the low-speed and transonic aerodynamics of vehicles that are not hypersonic, and jet noise.

Notices that are not research works are excluded, being every record whose title opens with the words Correction to, or with Correction, Clarification, Errata, Withdrawn or Withdrawal followed by a colon, and a record its publisher marks as removed. A record and its twin deposit are one document, so where two records carry the same title of five or more words and form a version pair, such as a meeting paper and its journal article, a preprint and its article, or a repository copy, only one is kept. Two records from one report server, two meeting papers and two book chapters are kept as distinct documents unless their records show one paper deposited twice. Book reviews, unsigned news items, encyclopedia and dictionary entries of two pages or fewer and the record of a whole conference volume, which lists a meeting’s papers and carries none of its own, are not admitted either, because they are not research works.

Several doubtful classes are kept, on the judgement that they belong to the literature this survey describes, and a reader who draws the line elsewhere would remove them. They are flight test methods, instrumentation and telemetry written for aircraft in general, flight control actuation and digital flight control in general, regenerative cooling of liquid rocket engines, since the coolant passage is the same device the scramjet uses, general computational fluid dynamics texts, classical transient conduction and thermal stress solutions with no stated application, thermal expansion of refractory metals, graphite, beryllium and its oxide and boron carbide, high-temperature seal glass, jet fuel quality, thermal stability and handling, projectile and missile aerodynamics at high Mach number, planetary entry aerothermodynamics, glide vehicles treated through their heating, aerodynamics or structures, and the low-speed aerodynamics of hypersonic configurations.

The survey has no residual cluster. Every title the reading kept belongs to one of the named literatures above, and the records that a broader grouping would have held were each read and either assigned to the literature their titles belong to or excluded.

Every research title has been read for relevance, so the off-topic share that remains is a matter of reading judgement. A reading of titles cannot show that a work is relevant in substance, so this is a statement about titles only.

Epistemic State

Historical Fact

The programme dates and cost, the designation date, the participating organisations, the vehicle dimensions and fuel load, the launch and boost arrangement, the four flight dates with their outcomes and recorded causes, and the burn durations. These come from the manufacturer’s announcements, the specialist designation directory, the Air Force and the general press, and are consistent across them except where noted.

Verified by Independent Derivation

Everything in this article expressed as a number is computed from published inputs and is reproducible from them. That covers the stagnation temperatures and their ratio, the isentropic stagnation pressure and density ratios, the dynamic pressures at both cruise conditions and the density ratio between them, the burn ratio against the X-43, the heating rate and heat load ratios, the Sutton and Graves heat flux across a range of nose radii and the radiation equilibrium temperatures it implies, the thermal penetration depths and their ratio, the isentropic area ratio and the Kantrowitz throat limit, the fuel flow rate and the air flow it implies at stoichiometric, the cooling power and its share of the fuel’s combustion energy, the fuel required for a three hundred second burn, the kinetic energy shares of the booster and the scramjet, the engine growth as a fraction of vehicle length and the engine length that growth implies, the powered distance, the product of specific impulse and lift-to-drag ratio the range relation yields, the net force and net specific impulse the flight realised, the burn fractions against the plan, and the programme arithmetic.

Analysis

The reading of duration as the quantity that converts a propulsion demonstration into a thermal one. The identification of the fuel’s dual role as the configuration’s binding constraint. The claim that the forebody, inlet, combustor and nozzle are one device rather than four.

Inference

That this engine, once lit and running on its working fuel, was not the component that limited its flights, and that its change from the starting fuel was a weaker point than its steady combustion. Both are inferred from four flights and three early endings, one of them caused by the engine itself, and that is a small sample. Three early endings are not a distribution.

What the Record Does Not Settle

Whether a scramjet can run for the hours an operational aircraft would need. Two hundred and ten seconds was the longest scramjet-powered flight in history when it was flown [Boeing X-51A WaveRider sets record with successful fourth flight], and it is three and a half minutes. Nothing in this record bears on the step from minutes to hours, and this article makes no claim about it.

What caused the second flight’s unstart. The Air Force announced a review of the telemetry [Second hypersonic flight ends prematurely, brings new flight test data, United States Air Force], and no finding of that review appears in the sources cited here.

Out of Scope

Rocket propulsion other than as the booster that got this vehicle to its start line, hypersonic weapons policy and doctrine, the boost-glide vehicles that carry no engine at all, and the turbine-based combined cycle work aimed at making such a vehicle take off from a runway.

Conclusion

The X-51A Waverider set out to show that a scramjet could run on a fuel you can put in a tank, and it did, for two hundred and ten seconds at Mach 5.

What it also showed, by falling short three times in three different ways, is where such an engine is weakest. A thermal seal cut the first flight short, a fin latch ended the third before the engine was lit, and the second ended when the inlet unstarted as the engine changed from ethylene to JP-7. Once the engine was running on JP-7 its combustion never stopped a flight, but getting it there stopped one.

Why a seal could end a flight of minutes is arithmetic, and this article has done it. A flight nineteen times longer than the X-43’s, at under a third the stagnation temperature and under a seventh the heating rate, still absorbs more than two and a half times the heat. Duration is not a scaling of the same problem. It is the arrival of a different one, in which the structure reaches equilibrium, every joint has to hold while the engine grows a quarter of a percent, and the engine’s coolant is the fuel you are trying to burn, whose capacity to absorb heat is between a twelfth and a seventeenth of the heat it makes.

And after all of it, the engine added about eleven percent of the vehicle’s energy while a rocket added eighty-nine. A cruise demonstration looks like that, and the split also measures the gap between demonstrating cruise and having an aircraft.
